Page 30 of Rescuing Kenna

His pulse quickened and the sensations that surged through his body were unlike any he’d ever experienced. He inhaled sharply. His hands smoothed over her back, adding pressure enough to let her know he enjoyed having her against him like this.

She loosened her arms first, but he quickly followed her lead. He swallowed, “Ready?”

“Yeah.”

He turned to the side so she could step past him, but he kept his hand at the small of her back. As he opened his truck door, he held his hand out to help her up into the seat. He grinned at her as he buckled her in.

“I can fasten my seatbelt,” she said with a chuckle.

“I know, but I kind of like it.”

Her cheeks turned a soft pink, and he winked at her before closing the door and striding around the front of the truck to his side.

During the short ride to the sheriff’s department Kenna twisted her hands in her lap, on top of the folder that held Kent’s papers. He reached over and squeezed her hands. “I’ll be right there with you. Every step of the way.”

She nodded. “I appreciate it.”

He pulled into the parking lot and saw Tate’s truck already there. He pointed it out to Kenna, and she nodded.

He helped her from the truck and walked with his hand on the small of her back. Inside, the receptionist smiled as she looked up, then her eyes widened when she saw Kenna’s face.

“If you follow me, the sheriff is expecting you,” she blurted.

Down the hallway, he kept contact with her as they strode into the conference room where the sheriff, Tate, and Addy sat talking, all eyes turned to them.

Sheriff Cranford’s lips turned down into a frown when he saw Kenna. Spencer didn’t want her feeling any more self-conscious than she already did, so he quickly nodded to the sheriff and held his hand out to shake. Sheriff Cranford shook his hand, then quietly offered Kenna a seat at the table next to Addy. He took the chair on the other side of her.

“Can I get you something to drink, Kenna?” the sheriff offered.

“No, thank you.”

She put the papers for Kent on top of the table and folded her hands over them. Within a minute, the receptionist buzzed the sheriff. “Sheriff, Gerard and Jasiah Weston are here with Kent Bennit.”

The sheriff glanced at Kenna, and she nodded.

Spencer’s heart swelled with pride for this tiny woman. She’d been through hell, but she was here, sitting before the people who represented those who had harmed her, and she did it gracefully.

The door opened, and he noticed the slight jump she made. He turned to look into her eyes and she frowned slightly, but nodded.

The three men entered the room and shook hands with all the others. Kenna stood and looked each of them in the eye as she extended her hand in greeting.

They were stone silent as the sheriff began explaining her presence. Gerard glanced at Kent, who then hung his head before saying, “I’m so sorry I wasn’t there to help you.”

Gerard asked, “Where were you?”

“I was down here looking for a job. I had an interview at Cyber Secure, for networking support,” Kent replied.

Gerard nodded, then glanced at Kenna once again. “He’ll take the papers you have for him, Ms. Lawrence.”

Kenna nodded and opened the manila folder in front of her. She held the papers up and looked at Kent. “Are you Kent Bennit?”

“Yes ma’am. I am.”

She held the papers out to him, a slight shake to them. “You have been served a Summons and Complaint.”

Kent took the papers gently from her hands. “Yes, ma’am.” Kent nodded and held the papers in front of him but didn’t read them.

Kenna sat once again and glanced at her watch while Tate explained their stance on Craig’s behavior and how he couldn’t behave like this. He’d recommend to the town council that they withhold utilities from the mountain as long as citizens were not safe going up there. Kenna was doing her job. Any workers going up there to install utilities would do their jobs and the BRR would guarantee safety before making any improvements.
