“Okay. It’s not far, but if you change your mind, just pull over and we’ll trade.”

“Thank you.” Her cheeks felt a rush of heat. She was getting used to that with Spencer. She blushed at the way he looked at her and the way he treated her. Sometimes she had to shake her head. She was getting so turned around by him.

She used the steering wheel to heft herself up into the Jeep. She froze as she sat, a lightning bolt of pain shooting down her side where she’d been kicked in the ribs.

“Are you alright?”

At the sound of his husky voice, she blinked rapidly as tears filled her eyes. “Yeah. I just...” She cleared her throat. “I forgot about my ribs being so sore. Stupid, really.”

He looked into her eyes, and the hushed timbre of his voice sent a whole different bolt of lightning through her body. “Don’t be so hard on yourself. It’ll take time, but remember, you’re badass.”

Emotions so foreign to her rushed forward and back, and her brain struggled to process them. So many feelings running through her as she stared into his eyes. One side of his lips curled up into a cute grin and that—wow, that made her nipples pucker.

Footsteps approaching had Spencer turning and the instant he did, his back straightened and the muscles in his shoulders bunched. His hands fisted, and she braced herself for something, not sure what.

“Hey, are you alright?” Colt yelled.

“She’s fine, Colt.”

“I didn’t ask you—Romeo!” Colt spat.

“Romeo? Really?”

“Kenna. I asked you a question.”

“She doesn’t have to answer your questions, Colt. Now, back up.”

“I don’t have to follow your orders, Spencer.” Colt mocked.

Another voice entered the mix and Kenna tried to see who it was, but the stabbing pain in her ribs kept her from doing so. “That’s enough. Colt, get back to the job or I’m going to have a chat with Baxter about your worth here. Kenna and Spencer are none of your business.”

“Fuck you, Henry.”

She heard Colt pivot, the gravel under his boots sliding and crunching.

Silence met her ears, and she tried looking in her rearview mirror to see what she could see. Twisting slowly in her seat so her knees faced Spencer alongside her, she could see Colt glaring at Henry and Spencer glaring at Colt, just like Henry. Colt turned back to Spencer and then took a step toward her when Spencer stepped to the side, blocking Colt from coming any closer.

“Get the fuck out of my way, Spencer,” Colt barked.

Spencer answered right back. “Come one step closer and you’ll look just like you’ve made Kenna look many times in her life.”

Colt took another step closer and Spencer slowly turned to her and lifted her legs into the Jeep. “Stay in here, honey,” he whispered. Then he closed her door. He pointed to the locks. “Lock it up.”

She did as he asked, then she watched as if in slow motion as Colt moved in again and in one huge, hard punch, Spencer downed him.

Spencer’s muscles tightened like a rope ready to snap. His jaw clenched, his back was ramrod straight and his hands were balled into fists, waiting for Colt to get up and punch him back.

Instead, Colt stood slowly, his back to her. His head was down and he held the side of his face as he walked past Henry, bumping him slightly as he moved past and then he disappeared behind Spencer’s pickup truck.

She turned the key in her ignition so she could roll her window down. Spencer faced her, and she watched in amazement as his face softened.

His voice was gravelly when he spoke to her. “Are you alright?”

She swallowed. “I’m badass. Are you alright?”

He grinned. It was beautiful. Like magic dust sprinkled over him. “I’m good.”

She stared into his eyes. “You’re amazing. Like a...” She shook her head slightly. “Like you take my breath away.”
