“I suspect it’s because I punched him earlier today.”

Officer Bradley looked him in the eyes.

“Why did you punch Colt Lowe?”

Kenna came out of the building and moved toward them. “See her face? Colt used to do that to her back when they dated in high school. She left town because she was afraid of him. Last night, he drove back and forth past this place eight or nine times. I recorded a few of them. Harassing Kenna.”

Kenna came to stand near him, but she stopped and looked up at him. He continued, “Today, he barked out questions to Kenna when we went back to the construction site to pick up her vehicle. He scared her, and I told him to back off. He didn’t. I told him again and my teammate told him as well. He didn’t listen and when he got too close to Kenna, I punched him.”

Officer Bradley looked at Kenna and nodded. Kenna pulled his right hand toward her and cracked open a water bottle. She poured the water on his hand, which stung, but he didn’t let on. She dabbed it dry with a gauze pad, then applied antibiotic ointment to it. They’d have to invest in antibiotic ointment at this rate.

“Did you see what happened today, Kenna?” Officer Bradley asked her.

“I did.” Kenna reached for his left hand and repeated her nursing. “I saw all of it.”

“Including the punch?”

“Yep.”

“Was it provoked?”

“Yes ma’am. Colt is real good at provoking.”

Once Kenna finished with his hands, she pulled her cell phone from her back pocket and tapped a few times. She turned her phone around and showed Officer Bradley the video she’d taken of Colt trying to run him down. Or terrorize him at the least.

Officer Bradley watched the video and asked, “Can you forward that to me?” She pulled out a business card and Kenna’s fingers flew over her phone. As soon as she finished, she handed Officer Bradley her card back. “All set.”

“You may want to keep my card in case you need it.”

“Thank you, but it’s faster to call 911. Hopefully, I won’t need to. That is, if you can keep Colt from driving past my house every hour all night long, revving his pipes to wake me up and harass me. I swear his fiancée must be dim-witted to be engaged to a jackass like that.”

“He’s engaged?”

“Yes ma’am. To Ami Pearson.”

“I’d appreciate it if you’d come back to the station to make a statement. I’ll type up our conversation here and you can sign it. If you can’t get there, I’ll be back around to have you look at it and sign it later.”

Spencer nodded at her. “Either way is fine with us, officer. Just let us know when your report is ready.”

Officer Bradley walked away, and he turned to pick up the mail laying in the parking area. Kenna followed behind him, taking the envelopes as he picked them up. Then he nodded toward the apartment. “I’m ready to get out of the sun. How about you?”

Life shouldn’t be this difficult. She’d left here once because of Colt, but now her father needed her and leaving wasn’t an option. Yet. Once her father was better, or if the worst happened and he passed, she’d close up shop and move back to Houston. Or somewhere. She didn’t have a job there now, and she didn’t have a place to live either. She’d hired a moving company to transport her items back here, then she hopped on a plane to get here sooner than her belongings, because her mom had said her father wouldn’t make it. That was a week ago, and this had been a long-ass week.

Kenna landed on the last step and let out a long sigh.

Spencer’s voice was close behind her. “It’s exhausting, isn’t it?”

“Yes.” She inhaled and turned to face him. “I need a nap.”

His head tilted down slightly, and his lips curled up in the sexiest smile. “Go on and lay down. I want to get this security system installed.”

“Don’t you want to rest after what you’ve been through?”

“Yes, of course. But I need to make sure we’re all set in case Colt causes more trouble.”

She felt conflicted. Spencer had been the perfect gentleman since he’d been here. They’d kissed a few times, and she liked it. Her lip was split, so she couldn’t kiss him like she wanted right now. And she doubted he’d want to have sex with her looking like a punching bag. But she wanted to feel a closeness with him. She wanted—something more.
