Page 36 of Rescuing Kenna

Spencer kissed her forehead, then wrapped his big powerful arms around her body and held her close.

She liked it. Even just this. Him holding her close, his aftershave filling her nostrils, his strength propping her up.

Kissing the top of her head, he said, “Stay here. Inside. Keep the doors locked. I’ll be back as soon as I can.”

“Okay.”

She felt a loss as she followed him down the hallway. He touched the control panel, still hanging by the wires he’d connected to it. Picking up the drill sitting on the counter, he drilled two holes above the panel and within thirty seconds, he had it attached to the wall.

“It’s not fully operational yet, but you can push this button right here when I close the door downstairs. That will set the alarm, and if anyone tries to get in, I’ll get a notification on my phone. Later on, I’ll get the rest of it set up and we’ll get the app on your phone so you can control it from wherever you are.”

“Okay.”

He grinned and holy hell, that little one-sided grin made her weak in the knees. “I’ll call you when I get back, so you can turn the alarm off.”

“Okay.”

He kissed her lips quickly, pointed to the button on the control panel, then strutted down the steps to the back door.

Just before closing the door, he glanced up at her and she nodded. Spencer closed the door behind him and she pushed the button. The light went red, the readout on the screen said, ‘Armed.’

Spencer glanced at the clock for what seemed like the millionth time. He let out a sigh and continued working on the security software.

“Figure it out yet?” Henry asked from behind him.

“No.” He scraped his hand through his hair. “They’ve hacked the system. And every time I think I’ve got it sorted, it jams up on me.” He tapped a few keys and tried another trick with the computer. He glanced at Henry. “Did you unplug each camera and then plug them back in?”

“Yeah. But the system seems so slow. It took a while for the lights to come back up.”

“Yeah.” He clicked between screens and tried to reconnect the cameras once again. This time they blinked and sputtered but came up on the screen. “Finally!”

Henry looked over his shoulder and they both waited for every camera to come up before feeling good about this progress.

As the last camera connected, he reached his hand up and Henry high-fived him.

“Okay, now I’ll check each camera’s schedules and make sure they’re focused.”

Henry stepped back to the entrance door. “I’ll be doing another perimeter walk just to make sure nothing’s happened since the cameras were down.”

“Thanks, Henry.”

Spencer glanced at the clock on his computer once more. He’d been at it for five hours now. He stood as he waited for his computer to connect all the dots to each of the hardware pieces he had in place. Lifting his arms, he stretched his back muscles, feeling the ones he’d abused earlier today when he'd dodged Colt's truck. He still hadn’t heard from the sheriff about whether they’d stopped Colt and arrested him for that little number.

He got a text from Maya.

“We’re on our way over to Kenna’s. Are you still working?”

“Yeah. I’ve got another couple of hours here.”

“Sounds good. We’ll make sure she’s safe till you return.”

She’d been safe all afternoon as far as he knew. She hadn’t called him and nothing had triggered the app for her cameras on his phone. He remembered the security system then texted Maya once again.

“Call Kenna when you get there. I have the security system only half installed, and she’ll need to push the unarmed button to let you in.”

She responded with a thumbs-up.
