Page 37 of Rescuing Kenna

He sat at the computer once more and started searching through the files he’d quarantined. Who the hell had hacked this system? It was sophisticated and, he’d thought, hack proof. Someone with some tricky computer knowledge had gotten inside their system.

The trailer door opened, and Tate stepped inside. “Figure it out?”

“Yeah. The cameras are up and running again and I’ve quarantined the files that affected them.”

“Who do you think had the knowledge to do something like this?”

Spencer turned and faced his friend and boss. “I’ve been wondering about Kent Bennit.”

Tate’s brows rose into his hairline. The thoughts going through his brain played out on his face. He heaved out a deep breath. “Tell me why.”

Spencer shook his head and shrugged. “I don’t have any solid proof. But last year Kent hacked into police squads, security systems around town, and even the stoplights and shut things down on a whim. Today, Kenna served him with court papers because he’s being sued for the damage he caused in town. It may have set him off.”

Tate heaved out a heavy sigh as he sat down. “I’m not saying you’re wrong, but he’s been working with us for months now. He’s even applying for jobs down here.”

“I know. He mentioned that today. And he looked horrified to see Kenna’s face. He apologized for not being there to protect her. He said he was at a job interview.”

“His interview was with Cyber Secure.” Tate scratched his chin.

“I’m not saying he’s the one for sure. I don’t have the proof. He’s just the first person who came to mind.”

Tate stood. “Okay. Glad you’re getting things sorted in here. We’ll keep this between ourselves for right now. I’ll do some questioning and see if Kent is up to something. In case it isn’t him, though, keep scouring the quarantined files for information.”

“Will do.”

Once he finished with the bug scour, he’d check schedules and make sure each camera pointed in the correct direction. Then he’d go back to Kenna’s.

His thoughts hadn’t left her since he’d gotten here today. They were close to having sex this afternoon. He wanted to. He wanted her. She was incredible, and he’d grown more and more fond of her as they spent time together. But she’d be leaving soon, and he’d do well not to get attached.

But having sex and enjoying each other shouldn’t be out of the question. She knew she was leaving, and she was ready to have sex with him. So, it’s not like she was planning a lifelong partnership here. And, when she left, they’d likely both be ready to move on. His only long-lasting relationship had been six months. They were both in the service and when he transferred to another base; they parted as friends, promised to keep in touch, but never did.

He’d always wondered about that. Once in a while he thought of calling her, but didn’t because he felt like she could have called him, but she didn’t. So he could have a good time here with Kenna while she was here and when she left, it would be just fine.

That thought process finished, he set about checking the cameras’ schedules so he could get home to Kenna. Hopefully, she was having fun with the girls while he was out. Hopefully, she didn’t decide she didn’t want him around anymore after her night with the girls. What did Addy say they do? Talk about the issues they have with men? Something like that.

She pushed the button to turn off the security system and walked downstairs to open the door to Lara, Maya, and Addy. As she neared the door she also heard Shianne’s voice and stifled an eye roll. Sometimes, Shianne was a bit much. But Lara loved her, and she could be fun.

Opening the door, she smiled at her friends, old and new, and stepped back as they entered.

Lara wrapped her in a hug, then stepped back and looked at her face. “Are you alright? I mean, I can see you’ve been beaten, and Tate warned me. But do you need anything?”

She chuckled. “No, I’m fine. I’ve been taking ibuprofen for pain and swelling, and I took a one-and-a-half-hour nap today. I felt much better after waking up.”

Shianne stepped inside next. “Oh, my god.” She stared, even leaning in and getting a nice close-up view. “How badly does it hurt?”

“It’s actually not as bad as it looks, to be honest.”

Lara grabbed Shianne’s arm and tugged her up the stairs as Maya and Addy crowded the entryway. She hugged them both briefly. “Nice to see you both. Thank you for agreeing to come here rather than meet out.”

Maya grinned. “I don’t care where I have a couple cocktails, as long as I do.”

Addy giggled. “It’s true. She doesn’t care.” Addy hugged her briefly, and she motioned with her arm for them to go up the stairs. She locked the door and checked it twice to make sure she’d locked it correctly. Her hands shook slightly. Inhaling a deep breath, she turned and saw Addy watching her.

Her cheeks burned. “I’m sorry. I just feel neurotic right now.”

Addy nodded and stepped close. “It’s normal. You’ve not only been through a savage beating, but you have an ex-boyfriend making you feel unsafe. Anyone in your same situation would feel the same way.”
