Her eyes watered slightly. “I only seem to feel safe when Spencer is here. I feel stupid saying this, but I locked myself in my bedroom after he left and didn’t leave until Maya texted.”

Addy linked an arm through hers and nodded. “Spencer is a great protector. Plus, his size alone makes him formidable. And he likes you, so that makes a difference, too.”

She nodded, and they sauntered up the steps. “How do you know he likes me?”

Addy giggled. “It’s impossible not to see it.”

She swallowed the lump in her throat. What did that look like and how could others see it? She knew he wanted to have sex with her, but she didn’t know he liked her. Well, the fact that he wanted to have sex with her would mean he liked her. But she wondered if it meant helikedher, liked her, or did he just like her and want to have sex with her? She would not ask Addy that question, but she wondered.

At the top of the steps she looked around at the food the ladies had laid out on the table. Then she saw the reusable containers sitting on the counter and realized Helissa probably packed them food.

Lara laughed. “Kenna, you should see your face. I mean, not the bruising, but the bewildered look. Didn’t you notice the bags we were carrying?”

She shook her head. “No.”

Lara shrugged. “It doesn’t matter. We’re all set up now, so let’s grab some food to eat and mix some drinks. I’m tending bar for the first round. Call out your orders, ladies.”

They took turns calling out for a glass of wine or a hard seltzer while she filled a plate with shrimp, and deviled eggs, and sliced beef, and cheese wedges, and veggies. She went to sit in the living room on the chair near the window, allowing three of them room on the sofa and another one to sit on the other side chair.

They sat and began eating, and Kenna vocalized her embarrassment. “I suppose we all would have been more comfortable at your place. There’s so much room there.”

Lara smiled. “It doesn’t matter. This is very cozy. Is this your furniture or was it here?”

“It’s mine. I moved it all back here since I don’t know where I’ll go next or when.”

Maya grinned. “So you might not go back to Houston?”

“I don’t know. I lost my job when my dad needed me to come back here. Without a job, I didn’t want to keep my apartment there. It was terribly expensive to keep.”

Shianne, never shy, asked, “How much is expensive?”

Lara admonished, “Shianne!”

Kenna laughed. “It’s okay. I paid two thousand dollars a month.”

“Holy crap!” Shianne exclaimed.

Lara shook her head. “My house payment isn’t that much.”

Kenna looked up at Lara. “That’s right, you have a house. What did you do with it when you and Tate married and moved into the HOG?”

Lara shrugged. “I still have it. I thought I’d rent it out eventually, but I don’t have the time to worry about it right now. So it’s sitting empty.”

Shianne shook her head. “I keep telling her she could get big bucks for an entire house.”

“What would an entire house around here rent for?” Kenna asked.

Lara bit into a piece of beef and chewed. She finally answered, “I’m thinking of asking nine hundred a month. Renter pays all utilities.”

“That’s not a bad rental fee.” Kenna said.

Loud pipes sounded outside and she glanced out the window. Colt drove by, slowing down near her place. She swallowed the dry knot in her throat and set the cheese in her fingers on her plate.

Maya stood and watched out the window, then looked at her. “Is that Colt’s truck?”

All she could do was nod her head.

Maya pulled her phone up and tapped a few times.
