“Maya, please don’t call Spencer.”

Maya’s eyes locked on hers. “I’m not.” She leaned forward. “I noted the time he drove by. But, for the record, Addy and I are as good at protection as Spencer. We wouldn’t need to call him if something happened. We’d handle it.”

Lara nodded. “Truth.”

Kenna’s cheeks heated. “I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to assume you couldn’t. I just wondered...”

“It’s okay. We just want you to know you’re safe.”

“Thank you.”

Maya winked at her and picked up her glass of wine. Kenna watched the beautiful woman take a sip of her wine and grin. “I can have a couple of drinks tonight, because Addy is actually the one on duty. And she’s also our designated driver.”

Addy nodded and took a drink of her water.

Shianne sat back on the matching chair to hers and took a drink from her wineglass. “Addy’s my DD too.”

Lara shook her head slowly, then turned to her. “So, tell us about Spencer.”

Oh, her cheeks burned so hot she felt feverish. Her friends laughed. Lara leaned forward. “Busted.”

“There’s really nothing to tell.” She fanned herself with her right hand and took a healthy drink from her wineglass, which made her friends laugh all the more. “He’s been helping me.”

Maya added, “Most ‘protectors’...” she used air quotes, “...don’t keep their hands at the small of their protectee’s back. And he’s kissed you, so that’s more than just helping you.”

“How do you know that?”

Addy, who had been quiet all this time, chimed in. “We’re trained to pay attention to things. Surroundings, people, situations. We’ve all seen the signs.”

Shianne leaned toward her. “He kissed you? Like once or more than once?”

Lara admonished Shianne once again. “Shianne. That’s sort of personal.”

“You’re the one who asked about Spencer first, Lara.”

“True, but I meant her feelings about him. Not the nitty-gritty details.”

Shianne sat back, huffy. “Well, since I went on a date with him to the Bourbon Ball last year and he didn’t so much as try to kiss me, I’m curious.”

Kenna turned toward Shianne. “You went on a date with Spencer?”

“Yeah. Well, I don’t think he wanted to go with me. It came about rather innocently enough. I was trying to get Lara and Tate together. We were all standing in the bakery and I mentioned Tate should take Lara to the Ball. Lara then said Spencer should take me. And that was all it was. Sadly. He’s hot!”

Kenna grinned and nodded. “He is hot.”

Maya finished her glass of wine and stood to refill her glass. “Anyone else need one?”

Colt drove by again, and Maya recorded the time on her phone. Lara turned to Maya. “Why didn’t the police arrest him for the crap he pulled?”

“I don’t know. That’s a brilliant question for the sheriff. Especially since there’s video of it.”

Kenna’s tummy rolled. “His father was always on the town board.”

Shianne waved her hand in the air. “He still is. He’s the president now and that mangy kid of his gets away with a ton of shit.”

Kenna’s phone signaled a text, and it unleashed butterflies in her tummy when she saw Spencer’s name on the text.

“I’m checking in. How are you doing?”
