He stepped forward and grabbed the front of her t-shirt, pulling her to him. His arms wrapped around her body, essentially caging her in.

“What are you getting at here, Kenna? Does this feel like a relationship to you?”

She sniffed lightly and stared into his eyes. “I think so. But...”

He kissed her lips, softly. Then stepped back. “We should probably talk about this.” He took her hand in his and pulled her to the foot of the bed. They sat side by side, hands clasped. He turned his head to look at her when he spoke. “We’ve fallen into an uncomplicated relationship. It’s easy because we’re here, secluded behind the walls of the HOG. We’re having great sex. We don’t argue. It’s been easy. It’s been great.”

“It has. But, I sense there’s a but coming.”

“Are you leaving? The state? Back to Houston?”

Her throat moved as she swallowed, and her body stiffened. “I don’t know.”

He nodded. “It’s hard for us to move past where we are, without knowing there will be anything else.”

Ouch. Just ouch.

His thumb smoothed circles into her palm as their fingers clasped together. She bit her bottom lip, happy that the cut had finally healed. She nodded her head, then looked into his handsome face. “You’re right. That is the elephant in the room, isn’t it?”

“I didn’t think it was until a few minutes ago.” He stood, letting go of her hand.

She swallowed the giant, dry, hard lump that had just formed in her throat. She started this. But she didn’t want her parents to grow to like Spencer if they wouldn't stay together. He’d sort of just lobbed that ball into her court.

“Hey,” he said above her.

She stood and took a deep breath. “Yeah. Sorry. I just worry about my parents. My dad’s heart is still so weak and when I first brought it up, I was just being kind of funny. But it’s not funny at all now, is it?”

“No. It’s not funny.” He hugged her close, and she wrapped her arms around his waist and closed her eyes.

He stepped back. “If you don’t want me to go with you to your parents, at least take one of the girls with you. Just, please, don’t go alone. And let me know what you decide to do.”

“Okay.” She inhaled and tried keeping the tears at bay.

“I have to get to the construction site today, Kenna. The contractors have finished with the new walls and I have stuff to do.”

“Of course,” she croaked out. Clearing her throat lightly, she plastered on a smile and nodded. “I’ll let you know.”

She saw the sadness in his eyes when he nodded and turned to leave. He gently closed the door behind him. She reached back for a pillow and let herself cry into it. Once she’d gotten that out of her system, she laid the pillow in its place, fixed her makeup in the bathroom mirror and left the room to have breakfast before she got to work.

The laughter and chatter that filtered from the kitchen reached her ears before the delicious aroma of breakfast reached her nostrils. As she neared the coffeepot, she heard a chorus of good mornings and plastered that smile right back on her face before replying, “Good morning.”

Her place next to Spencer was waiting for her, and she set her cup on the table and went to fill her plate from the food displayed on the counter. She picked a few slices of apple, a bit of scrambled eggs, and a couple of slices of bacon. She sat next to Spencer, who continued to eat his breakfast, and listened as Henry teased Maya about the video game they’d played the night before.

Spencer finished with his breakfast, then sat back to finish his coffee, and she was grateful when he wrapped his arm around the back of her chair. She glanced at him and smiled, but he didn’t smile back.

Henry asked, “What’s happening today?”

“I’m working on the new security system with the electrical contractor.”

Henry finished his coffee. “Any bets on whether Colt actually shows up for work this week?”

Tate leaned forward. “I found out why he hasn’t been there for a week. Turns out Baxter gave him a week off without pay because of his actions.”

She looked at Tate, but he didn’t look at her, so she continued to eat her breakfast. Her stomach didn’t feel like eating. At all. But she didn’t want anyone to know they’d had their discussion. And it left them both feeling rather blue. It was her fault. She shouldn’t have said anything.

Maya addressed her. “Kenna, what do you have going on today?”
