She swallowed her eggs. “I have a couple of documents to serve today. Then, I’m hoping to visit with my parents.”

“How’s your dad doing?”

“Mom says he’s still weak. I feel bad that I didn’t go there last week, but I didn’t want him seeing me bruised and get upset.”

“Yeah. That was likely a good call.” Maya finished her coffee. “If you need anyone to go along with you on your service, just let me know. I’m off today.”

“Thank you,” she whispered. Her stomach clenched as Spencer stood. Luckily, Henry and Maya stood also, so it wasn’t so obvious.

She stood with her plate and followed behind Spencer to the sink. He turned after she set her plate down, kissed her lips lightly and whispered, “Don’t go without someone with you.”

“Okay.”

He nodded and left her standing by the sink, watching him walk away. That’s when it hit her. Could she just leave now? What if her dad was doing much better and she could go somewhere else? Would she? As long as Colt was an issue, she wouldn’t feel safe.

Her phone buzzed, and she pulled it from her back pocket. The number was a series of nines, but nothing else. She tapped the message, only to see a picture of her walking into her office a couple of days ago with Spencer. The text said,

“I’m always watching.”

She closed the text, pocketed her phone, and rinsed her plate.

Maya came to stand beside her, coffee cup recently refilled, her back leaning against the counter. “So, what’s up?”

Kenna rubbed her lips together, afraid if she spoke, the tears would burst forth again. She felt rather raw right now.

“I don’t know.”

“How can you not know?”

“I made the mistake of asking Spencer if we were in a relationship. I was kind of joking because I thought I should take him with me to see my parents. But he asked me if I still planned on leaving here when Daddy was better. I said I didn’t know. And that seemed to put a damper on everything.”

“Ugh. Yeah. I can see that it would.” Maya sipped her coffee, then asked, “Well, would you?”

“I don’t know. I’m not safe here with Colt. That’s not a way to live.”

“Right.” Maya sipped at her coffee again as she stared across the room. “Did anyone ever tell you about Aidyn and Elena?”

“No. Only that he used to live here, but they went back to Indiana.”

“Yes. Because it wasn’t safe here for her because of Craig. It wasn’t really safe here for Aidyn any longer either. Because of Craig.”

“Right.”

She turned and leaned her back against the counter like Maya.

Maya grinned. “You don’t get it, do you?”

“Get what?”

“It doesn’t have to be either-or. You can be safe here or not. You can be safe somewhere else with Spencer if you both want. Or, you can both work to make sure Colt isn’t an issue and you can stay. There are options.”

She stared at her friend. She was beautiful, with her olive skin and dark hair. Her sparkly brown eyes positively glittered sometimes when she was being a shit. Right now, her eyes were earnest. Maya shrugged, pushed off from the counter and moved away. “Just sayin.”

The day dragged by slower than a snail on a lazy day. He’d looked at his watch a million times during the morning hours. Then got sick of the time not moving and attempted to stop looking at his watch. Colt was absent from the job site again today, which made him comfortable and not. If he wasn’t here, was he following Kenna? He hadn’t left things that great with Kenna this morning, and that pissed him off. Why did the thought of her leaving put such a sour spot in the pit of his stomach? He knew when he first met her that she’d be leaving one day. He was protecting her and having fun in the meantime. But today when she asked if they were in a relationship, what the future could hold came flooding over him. And now he struggled to think of this as a little fun.

“Spencer?”
