Page 46 of Rescuing Kenna

“What?” He looked over at the contractor he was working with on the security lines.

“I asked you if you got the wires run in the north wall.”

He shook his head. “Oh. Yeah. I did.”

“Okay. Why don’t we take a break here? I’ve got some emails to respond to and we’ve been at this for several hours now.”

“Okay.” As he strutted across the construction site, his phone buzzed. He pulled it from his back pocket and saw a text from a number that was all nines. Tapping it to open the message, he saw a picture of Kenna, taken today by the looks of her clothing. She was walking into Lara’s bakery. The text said,

“I’m always watching.”

Then the text disappeared. Poof. Gone from his phone. His brows furrowed together as he tried to retrieve it. He jogged to the construction trailer and pulled up his texts on his laptop. He ran all of his texts through the GHOST system, so hopefully, it had been captured.

The system opened painfully slowly and as he opened his messages, the image faded. He captured a screenshot of it. Though it had faded, he could still see the photo. Then his fingers scrolled, and he found Kenna’s number.

“Hi.”

“Where are you?”

“I’m at the office.”

“Are you alone?”

She was quiet for a little too long and his stomach twisted.

“Kenna? Are you alone?”

“Yes.”

He let out a shaky breath. “Did you go to Lara’s today?”

“You’re behaving just like Colt.”

“I’m nothing like Colt. You should certainly know that by now. I got a text just a few minutes ago of a picture of you walking into Lara’s today.”

He heard movement and the squeak of a chair. Then she replied, “I’m sorry.”

“I’ll come and get you and follow you home.”

“No.” He heard her huff out a breath. “Don’t do that. It’s alright. I’m locked inside here and I have a little work to do. I’ll be at the HOG in about an hour.”

“Kenna.” He swallowed and tried to get his stomach to stop twisting so he could catch his breath. “I’m sorry about this morning. I don’t know why I let it get so heavy.”

“I am too. My stomach has been in knots all day.”

“Mine too.”

He could hear her sniff on the other end of the line and his heart felt like it was being squeezed by an iron fist. “Stay there. I’ll be there in a few minutes.”

“Spencer. You don’t have to come. I probably need...”

“I’ll be there.” He ended the call and heaved out a deep breath. The first thing he did was look up Colt’s address. Tonight, he’d sneak out to Colt’s place and put a tracker on his truck.

He closed the lid on his computer and tucked it into its bag. He texted Henry to tell him he was heading out for the day and got a thumbs-up.

He jumped in his truck, which he’d just gotten back from the dealership, blue paint removed, and turned toward The Paper Trail.

He observed Kenna’s Jeep between the buildings, the paint had been removed, and released a breath. He pulled in behind her Jeep and jumped from his truck. He marched swiftly to the porch and rapped on the door so she could open it.
