Tate answered, “It’s in my office hooked to my computer. We’re running some scanning software on it to see if we can locate the text that disappeared in the metadata. Then we’ll see if we can trace it. I’ve got Spencer’s phone and running the same thing on it.”

She turned to Spencer. “I thought you captured the text on your phone.”

“I only got a screenshot as it was fading.”

“Oh.”

She took a deep breath. Spencer sat next to her and turned her chair to face him. “We’re doing everything we can to figure this out. But it’s important you stay with Addy today and only go where you need to go. Do you absolutely have to effect service today on those parties?”

She slowly shook her head. “No. I just like to do it right away. Neither of these are something that has to be done today.”

“Kenna. Honey, please don’t work today. Right now, we don’t know where Colt is or even if it is Colt.”

Her brows bunched together. “Who else could it be?” She stared into Spencer’s eyes.

His were steady and his face was calm when he replied. “It could be Kent Bennit.”

“Why would he do that? I thought he was working with you all to create peace.”

“He is. But we know he has computer skills, and he’s used them similarly in the past. Plus, you served him with papers suing him, so he may have taken that as a slap in the face.”

“I’m not suing him. Someone else is.”

“We know, honey. But sometimes people aren’t rational.”

She turned to Addy, who watched silently as they spoke. Her face was unreadable.

Kenna took a deep breath and let it out slowly.

Spencer leaned in and kissed her quickly. “Tate, Henry, and I have to go out for a while. Don’t be gone long, please.”

She nodded as he turned her chair back to the table. When she lifted her head, she saw the three men exiting into the garage. Her eyes landed on Addy’s and she shrugged. “I guess you’re stuck with me today.”

Addy grinned. “We’ll make the best of it.”

Spencer’s feet took him around the new building several times. He measured, adjusted the cameras and measured again. Tate was in the construction trailer speaking to Baxter about the next steps and Henry was walking the perimeter again. They all felt as though the BRR was about to strike and they didn’t know where or how. But something was up.

He heard an old truck nearing the base from the mountain road and he stopped to watch which direction it went once it reached the county road.

As it turned toward the construction site, he moved forward toward the truck. He pulled his phone from his back pocket and tapped Henry’s number.

“What’s up?”

“BRR truck just pulled into the lot.”

“I’m on my way.”

Rounding the building, he saw Gerard and Jasiah Weston alight from the truck. Gerard called to him as he neared.

“Spencer, we came to speak with you.”

“Okay. What’s on your mind?”

“We’d like the power brought up the mountain. I know it’s something the town has to approve, but we’re six months into our negotiations and all we’ve seen from it is our citizens are finding jobs and working to pay the taxes, but we’re offered nothing in return. It’s one thing that has Craig stewing right now.”

Spencer’s jaw tightened. They had a lot of nerve. Henry approached and Tate exited the construction trailer and came toward them. “Have you spoken to him about the beating Kenna took?”
