Page 58 of Rescuing Kenna

She looked at the clock on the bedside table. It was eight-thirty. She hadn’t slept this late since she’d been a teenager.

As she stood in the shower, she envisioned the warm water washing yesterday’s sadness away. After stepping out of the shower, she realized it didn’t. Her heart hurt. Her dad would no longer be around to answer questions or offer advice, and she wondered how she’d get through the rest of her life. It seemed empty in a way she’d never experienced.

After dressing, she left the sanctuary of the bedroom she shared with Spencer and felt a vulnerability she’d never felt before.

People filled the kitchen. Spencer’s teammates, Lara and Helissa, they were all there. Spencer smiled at her. “Good morning.”

“Morning.”

Lara wrapped her in a warm embrace. “Good morning. I’m here if you need anything.”

“Thank you. I don’t even know what I need to be honest.”

Lara nodded. “I know. Remember, only last year I went through this.”

Kenna’s eyes rounded. “Oh, God, I’m so sorry. I completely forgot Lara. I guess I’m all wrapped up in my sadness. Please forgive me.”

Lara shook her pretty head and locked eyes with her. “No need to be sorry. For me, besides the grief of knowing I’d never see him again, I had things to deal with emotionally. The betrayals, lies, Kent. So much stuff to unpack, and it takes time. I’m still unpacking things.”

“I bet you are.” She took a deep breath. “I have stuff too, you know. To unpack. Colt, and Daddy’s decisions to not have him arrested. I felt that betrayal and we never talked about it. Now I never can.”

“Yeah. That’s the unpacking part. It’ll hit you in waves. You’ll be angry. Sad. Hurt. And feel like there’s no way to sort it or settle it because he’s gone. But I offer you my support. We can unpack together.”

“Lara. Thank you.”

Lara squeezed her in a hug once more, then stepped away.

Spencer hugged her close and kissed the top of her head. “We’ve eaten, but Helissa saved you a plate. Sit down and I’ll get it for you.”

She took her usual seat at the table. Maya reached across and grabbed her hand. “We’re all here for you if you need anything.”

She smiled. A bit surprised the tears weren’t falling down her cheeks, but she’d cried so much yesterday there weren’t more tears. Myles, Henry, Addy, and Tate all nodded their heads in agreement.

“Thank you all so much. I promise to ask if I need anything.”

Spencer set a plate in front of her and a cup of coffee. It smelled so good and her stomach rumbled slightly.

She began eating as Tate spoke. “So, Kenna, we were just discussing the texts yesterday and the email.”

“You mean the day before yesterday?” She sipped her coffee.

Spencer cleared his throat slightly. “We received another text yesterday, Kenna.”

Her head swiveled slowly to look into his eyes. “What did it say?”

He frowned slightly, his handsome face still handsome. “Nothing. It was a picture of your parents’ house.”

Her brows shot up. “He was there?”

“Someone was.”

“When?”

Spencer’s eyes didn’t leave hers. When he replied, his tone was even and sure and it gave her some comfort. “Addy’s car is in the driveway in the picture. But the doctor’s car isn’t yet. So, after you and Addy arrived but before he did.”

She turned to Addy. Addy nodded. “I was watching as we drove and didn’t see anyone following us. But, if it’s Colt, he’d likely know the direction we were going and drive past later to see if his hunch was correct.”

She whispered, “Yeah.”
