“If you’re going to be cocky—Spencer— we’re going to have us some trouble.”

“I’m not being cocky. Kenna has papers for Craig. How do you think Craig would respond if he knew you were reading his private papers?”

“I wasn’t going to read them. I just want to know.”

Her heartbeat increased, and she moved a step closer. “I have court papers for Craig.”

“He don’t want no court papers.”

“I understand.” Her voice shook slightly, and she hated that. “I’m required by the court to make sure he gets them. I have to hand them to him myself.”

Both men eyed her suspiciously, but she stood still like Spencer was doing and tried not to look scared.

“Hang on,” the man in the blue shirt said. He got on his 4-wheeler and took off up the mountain road while the other stood staring at her.

Spencer diverted his attention by asking. “How are things going up there these days? I see a few of you have jobs down the mountain.”

The glare he received in return was scary, but Spencer didn’t seem to let it bother him.

“I’m not gonna sit here and chitchat with you.”

Spencer shrugged and turned to her. “You want to chitchat?”

Her nerves got the better of her and she giggled. “Sure.”

“So, as soon as we’re finished delivering these papers to Craig, what are your plans?”

She swallowed because she thought he was going to ask her out on a date. And that conflicted her. Did she want to go on a date? Maybe. What could it hurt? He seemed nice enough. He was handsome and strong and brave, unlike some men she’d met lately.

“I’m... I’ve got some unpacking to do. Nothing super important.”

Spencer nodded and grinned. “I’m going to eat, fire off some rounds in the range, then do nothing.”

She felt her face fall. He wasn’t asking her out. He was actually chitchatting.

“That sounds like a nice evening.”

The motor of the 4-wheeler reached her ears and Spencer turned toward the sound. The second man jumped off his machine and crossed his arms over his chest.

“Craig said you can crawl down the mountain and die for all he cares. He doesn’t want any of your court papers. Your court doesn’t mean shit to him.”

She was dumbfounded. “Regardless, it’s my job to give him these papers.”

“He doesn’t care two shits about your job. Beat it.”

Spencer turned to her, “Let’s go Kenna.”

“But I have to serve these papers. I can’t just leave them. I have to hand them to him.”

“Let’s go. We’ll talk about it on the way down.”

“But...”

Spencer stepped right into her space. His voice lowered, and he whispered, “Let’s go. We’ll talk about it.”

He touched her shoulder and gently turned her around. She followed him blindly without thinking. Mostly because her head was spinning. Spencer opened the passenger door, and she stepped into the truck and plopped on the seat. A big whoosh of air escaped her lungs as Spencer walked in front of the truck. He nodded at the two men watching them. One of them had a stupid grin on his stupid face. The other glared at her.

Spencer hopped in his truck and started it, then slowly backed them down the mountain road. At a turnout, he turned the truck around and moved them toward the bottom of the mountain.
