“No. I saw an arm. Briefly. Likely taking the picture. And then I heard the vehicle leave.”

“I didn’t hear Colt’s pipes.”

“No, I didn’t either. So, he was in an unfamiliar vehicle or it wasn’t him.”

She gasped. “Who else would want to scare me?”

He stared at her face, her beautiful face. The bruises were fading and without makeup, he could see them, but it was merely a discoloration at this point. He could see that she had concealed the bruising with makeup.

“Hopefully, we’ll have an answer soon. But, I’d say for now, our peace and tranquility has been disturbed. Should we head back home?”

She nodded. “I’ll call my mom on the way and see if there is anything else I should do today.”

“Do you want to go back and spend time with your brothers?”

She blew out a breath and puffed her cheeks out. “I know this might sound bad, but no. Not today. They’re all sad. I’m sad too, but I haven’t told them what’s been happening and my mind is so split on all of this. And I just can’t sit in that sad house right now. It’s clawing at my stomach.”

He kissed her forehead and held her head in his hands once again. “Kenna. I love you. I want nothing to happen to you, ever. Please don’t be a hero.”

“I won’t. I’ll let you be my hero.”

"Get some rest, honey. I'll see you in the morning." Her mom sounded so sad, Kenna thought.

“I will. Good night, Mama. Call me if you need anything.”

Spencer’s phone rang as she hung up. She grinned, and he shook his head as he answered with the Bluetooth in his truck.

“Hi, Mom.”

“Hi, Spencer. Your dad and I will be in later tonight. We’re leaving here in a few minutes.”

“That’s great. Mom, Kenna is here with me. Kenna, meet my mom, Yvette.”

“Hi, Yvette. It’s nice to meet you.”

She felt sheepish, but it was better than this long anticipation. Plus, she’d been through enough lately that pleasant surprises were few, so she’d take it.

“It’s nice to meet you, Kenna. I’m looking forward to chatting with you when we get there.”

“I’m looking forward to meeting you, too.”

“Also, please accept our condolences on the passing of your father. We’re deeply sorry.”

She swallowed the lump in her throat and blinked away the tears. “Thank you.”

She took some deep breaths and Spencer took her hand in his.

“We’ll watch for you to pull in. We’ll sit around the fire pit and have a friendly chat. How does that sound?”

His mom giggled. “It sounds like the best old times ever.”

“Good. See you soon. Love you.”

“Love you too, honey. See you soon.”

Spencer tapped the button on his steering wheel to end the call, then sat back with a contemplative look on his face.
