“So, will you tell me about the best old times?”

He laughed, and she stared at him. He was handsome always. But, when he laughed, whew, that was something.

“Growing up, we’d build a fire in our fire pit and sit around roasting marshmallows and having drinks and chatting. It was quiet time and therapeutic in that I’d tell them everything about my day. They’d tell me about theirs, and we were just a regular family. I loved it best when Dani was home. She’s a spitfire and she’s fun.”

“Aww, that sounds like enjoyable times. I’m happy to be included in your best old times.”

He chuckled. “It’ll be the best new times now.” He kissed her fingers again, and she swooned. Sort of. But wow!

He pulled into Paxton’s Grocery. “Gotta go get marshmallows, graham crackers, and chocolate bars.”

“Okay. I haven’t had a s’more in...wow, I can’t remember the last time.”

“Then it’s time to have one. Or two.”

He strode around the truck to help her out, a ritual she’d grown to love. They walked into Paxton’s hand in hand, and she realized it was the most normal moment she’d had in weeks. That was sad.

Spencer pushed a cart and stopped in front of the marshmallows. He dropped three large bags of them into the cart and her mouth dropped open.

“Holy crap. How many are you going to eat?”

“Honey, I have teammates at home who have good appetites.”

“Okay.” She followed along as he picked three boxes of graham crackers from a shelf and the same with the chocolate bars. He found three eight-packs of full-size chocolate bars. She almost got a cavity from the sweets in the cart.

He swung by the liquor aisle and bought four cases of beer and two cases of hard seltzers.

“We’re really having a party tonight,” she teased.

“It’s so overdue.”

She followed along as he browsed the store for anything else that looked good.

“Hi, Kenna, is that you?”

Kenna blinked then realized who had addressed her. “Hi, Ami. Yes, it’s me.”

Spencer shifted alongside her and she slightly shook her head and tried to not look around in case Colt had come to the store with Ami. “This is Spencer Lawson. Spencer, this is Ami Pearson. She’s engaged to Colt.”

Spencer reached out to shake Ami’s hand. Ami was staring at her and didn’t notice for a moment. Kenna ignored the tiny prickles at the back of her neck.

“Nice to meet you, Ami.”

The smile didn’t reach her eyes, but she replied. “Uh. Oh. It’s nice to meet you too.”

Ami took a deep breath. “Are you staying in town long, Kenna?”

Kenna looked up at Spencer, and the grin he returned made her heartbeat speed up. He did that.

“I’m not sure right now.”

Spencer interrupted the conversation. “Hey, it was nice to meet you Ami, but we have to get going. My parents are coming into town tonight.”

Ami jerked at the abrupt change but nodded. “Oh. Of course. Have fun.”

Spencer placed his hand at the small of her back and ushered them quickly to the checkout.

After loading the groceries into the truck, they headed toward the HOG. She glanced at the clock on the console and saw it was six p.m. Where had the day gone?
