“How long have you known Ami?” Spencer asked.

She shrugged. “You know it’s a small town. I’ve known her since school, back in the day. Obviously, I didn’t stay in contact while I was gone.”

“Okay.” He turned into the garage. She relaxed as he shut off the truck. It felt like home here.

After carrying the groceries into the kitchen, Spencer glanced at her. “Can I have your phone?”

Her brows furrowed, then smoothed, and she handed over her phone. He held it high and nodded at Tate, who was eating dinner with Lara and Myles.

“Kenna received two more texts today.”

Tate shook his head. “Plug it in. I’ll check it when I’m finished.”

“Will do. And my parents will be here in a couple of hours. We’re having a fire in the pit and making s’mores.”

Lara laughed. “I wondered what you were doing with all that stuff.”

Kenna nodded at Lara. “It’s daunting. My teeth hurt looking at all this sugar.”

Lara nodded. “Dinner is in the oven, staying warm. Help yourself.”

She pulled plates from the cupboard and pulled a roast with the fixings from the oven. Filling Spencer’s plate and half-filling hers, she carried them to the table and sat.

Lara smiled at her. “Did you get everything planned today for your dad’s funeral?”

“They did. I only ordered the flowers, then Spence and I went for a drive. That’s when I got the texts.”

Tate glanced her way. “We’ll find out who’s doing it, Kenna. Cyber Unit at RAPTOR told me this afternoon they’re close to pinpointing the IP address.”

“That will be a joyous day.”

Spencer came back into the kitchen and sat at the table with them. He tackled his food and she watched in amazement. Where did he put it all?

Addy entered the kitchen from the living area. “I hear we’re having guests tonight?”

Myles nodded. “I guess we’re partying too.” He nodded to the pile of marshmallows, chocolate, and crackers on the counter.

“Oh, my God. That’s a lot of sugar.”

Spencer laughed. “You should see all the beer in my truck.”

Myles laughed and stood with his plate. “I’ll bring it in.”

Henry entered the kitchen and sat at the table with them. He said nothing, but she’d noticed he didn’t chat needlessly. Finally, Maya came into the room and stopped when she saw the pile of sugar on the counter. “What the hell?”

“The Lawsons will be here soon. Fire pit and drinking with s’mores tonight.” Myles grinned as he set two cases of beer on the counter.

“Holy shit.” Maya breathed.

Kenna sat back and watched these people chat, laugh, and live, and she realized why she enjoyed living here. They were awesome together. They were siblings with different parents. Except for Maya and Myles. It was comfortable here, and she felt safe in their presence. But what she really loved was Spencer. He’d been with her through so much.

He laid another log on the fire and sat back in his chair. He reached for Kenna’s hand and their fingers instantly locked. His dad glanced at him and nodded. He still wore that big ole beard to cover the scar on the side of his face. It bothered him more than anyone, and Spencer had never known his father without it. But his mom liked the beard and called Dad a lumberjack, which he said he didn’t like, but secretly did.

Tate emerged from the kitchen with a bucket full of beers and handed it around so everyone had a fresh drink.

His mom stood. “I’m heading to bed, folks. It’s been a long day, but I look forward to spending the day with you tomorrow.”
