Page 75 of Rescuing Kenna

Yvette reached over and took her hand and she moved over into Spencer’s seat to sit next to her future mother-in-law. Though Yvette didn’t know that yet.

Screaming filled the air and then the words, “I want that bitch out of here.”

She swallowed, and her breathing came in spurts. Yvette squeezed her hand tighter, and she felt an equal amount of fear and hope.

Finally, Officer Gordon came into the room from the kitchen with Ami Pearson in handcuffs.

“Oh my God!” Kenna exclaimed.

Yvette leaned close. “Is that her?”

“Yes.”

Ami’s eyes sought hers, and when they finally locked on each other, Ami snarled. “Get. Out. Of. Town.”

She swallowed a rock that had formed in her throat and tears streamed down her face. It was all just too much.

Spencer rushed over to them and pulled her to her feet, then wrapped his arms around her. “It’s okay, sweetheart. She won’t bother you again.”

“I’ve never seen such hate,” she said into his chest.

“People do weird things to others, honey. After they question her, we’ll see what her intentions were. It seems like she was simply trying to scare you away.”

Her brother Sean came close. “Kenna, do you know what that was all about?”

She nodded. “She’s engaged to Colt Lowe.”

“And?”

Spencer kept her close, but spoke to Sean. “She’s been stalking Kenna since she’s been home. It’s been stressful.”

“Kenna, why didn’t you say something?”

She took a deep breath before responding. “With Daddy so sick at first and then passing, I just didn’t want anyone else to worry.” She looked into Spencer’s handsome face. “Spencer’s been taking care of me. Protecting me. Rescuing me.”

Spencer stared at Kenna’s finger. The ring they’d picked out gleamed brightly in the sun. He’d never spent so much on such a little thing, but he was so proud to see it on her finger right now.

He drove them toward the HOG, where everyone would be eating dinner now. It was his parents’ last day in town, and he and Kenna had begged off for a bit of time today. He told them they had some things to wrap up at Kenna’s mom’s house. A little white lie he’d apologize for later.

“It’s so beautiful, Spencer.”

He looked into her eyes, and his smile grew. “It is. It still doesn’t rival you, though.”

She laughed. “You always make me feel special.”

He lifted her left hand and kissed her fingers. “When are we getting married, Kenna?”

She heaved out a deep breath. “I don’t know. Of course, I want my brothers here. I don’t know when they can get back. What about your parents and Dani? When will they be able to come back here for a wedding?”

He laughed. “My parents will be here whenever we tell them the date is. Dani, if I give her enough notice, she’ll make it. So that brings us back to your brothers.”

“Yeah. Maybe we can ask them when we tell them we’re getting married.”

He chuckled. “That sounds like a plan.”

She grinned, and his mind whirled. Without a moment in between, he blurted out. “I want to get married right away. Maybe Mom and Dad can stay a few more days and we’ll get married here. At the HOG. They can be here. Your brothers are still here. They can be here too.”
