Unaware of the thoughts that have been going through my mind, both Gregorio and Alma jump.

“Wife?” Alma blinks rapidly.

“Wife,” I reiterate.

She stares at me for several seconds before she turns to Gregorio. “Daddy, it’s time to do the right thing.” She pushes off her chair and drops to her knees in front of him, taking his hands in hers. “Carina needs you.”

“But he’ll kill me!” he cries.

“Hemightkill you. He’ll certainly killherif you don’t.” Alma wipes a tear from her cheek. “She’s done it for you. You owe her.”

Gregorio sighs as he traces the outline of her jaw. He lets out a long, shaky breath, then looks at me. “All right.” His voice cracks, and I can tell he truly believes he’s being sent to the guillotine. “Let’s go get my daughter.”

Flag’s Point is the largest privately owned marina located on the East River. It’s perfectly positioned with quick access to the bay and between two other businesses that, while open, don’t operate year-round. That means they can do whatever they want without the worry of prying eyes or of being cornered if they’re discovered.

“Wish I would’ve thought about buying this place,” I say to Gunn as we peer toward one of the shipyards in the distance.

“Now you know.” He shifts in the car seat behind me. “Just start buying up shitty lots and make something out of them.”

We’re parked in the shadows as we await the hour when Black is expecting us. We’re in one of three SUVs. He said he would expect me to be armed. Well, I’m not going to disappoint him. Not only is my security detail ready for a fight, but I have reinforcements.

Noah Esposito and Gavin Alexander and some of their men are with us. Ready to go against our common enemy.

“Daddy, everything will be all right.” Alma, who finally showed some backbone when she insisted on coming along, has been softly crooning the entire drive.

I’m not sure if she’s helping to calm a terrified man or making things worse.

It doesn’t matter. He’s here now, and I won’t allow him to back out.

I turn in my seat to look at him. “You know the plan, Di Persia. Do not leave the vehicle until Hansen tells you to. And you”—I point to Alma—“do not leave the vehicle at all.”

“So he’s going to take Daddy?” she asks.

“That’s the plan. Right now, the important thing is to get your sister to safety. After, we can deal with getting your father.” If he’s still alive by then, that is.

“It’s time,” Gunn says. He tugs back on the slide of his Glock, loading a bullet into the chamber. “Try not to die before I take that bitch out.”

“We’ll do our best.”

“Oh God,” Alma cries as she watches him leave the car and slink out into the night.

The three SUVs drive farther, to the narrow road that leads to the marina’s entrance. A man at the gate steps closer, waving us through with a friendly and benign smile. It doesn’t fool me, though. He may seem harmless, but I’m sure he’s as armed as we are. And just as deadly.

We move through the gate. From there, we’re guided by guards down a path that leads to the docks.

“I’m scared, Daddy,” Alma whispers.

“Me too,” Gregorio tells her.

Our vehicles are surrounded by armed men the moment we stop. I turn to Hansen, and we communicate in silence.Ready.

I step out and follow the leader over the wooden deck. At the end, beside a boat on standby, are Gideon and the blonde assassin bitch. And between them is Carina.

The first thing I do is scan her for any sign of injury. I already plan on killing Gideon for everything else he’s done, but if he’s hurt her, I will take my sweet time doing it.
