Though her hands are tied, her chin is tilted at a defiant angle that tells me she still has fight in her. And other than disheveled hair, there are no bruises or cuts visible. No evidence that she’s been beaten.

“Sinacore,” Gideon greets, calling my attention to him. “I wasn’t sure you’d show up.”

“Your invitation left no room for refusal.”

His eyes locked on me, he leans near Carina. “And you said he didn’t love you enough to come.”

She turns away from him, the anger evident in her expression, but says nothing.

“I’d like my wife returned to me,” I tell him.

His mouth pulls up. “Don’t you mean sister-in-law?” He chuckles when I don’t reply. “You may have Carina back, though I must admit, I’m tempted to keep her. She’s feisty. What do you say, Scarlet?”

The blonde bitch smiles. “Do you mean as a partner or for target practice?” Her hand slides up Carina’s back, and she does something that makes her wince.

My foot twitches as I fight the urge to spring forward and take her out. “Leave her out of this, Black. I brought what you really want. Gregorio.”

His eyes gleam with malice as he looks behind me. “Where is Di Persia? I trust you didn’t have too much trouble locating him.”

“He’s in one of those vehicles.” I raise my hand to stop him when he attempts to take a step toward me. “You won’t be able to see inside to tell which one he’s in or how many guards are staring back. But they can see you. All of my men have their firearms aimed at your head.”

“And I have all of my men pointing their guns at your vehicles.” He taps his chin. “Who makes the first move?”

“You do. Release Carina, I give you Gregorio.”

“Then what?” he asks.

“Then we leave.” Not that I believe it will be that easy.

He watches me suspiciously. “How can I be sure you won’t attempt to rescue him after? Your family seems to enjoy interfering in my business.”

“Is that why you killed my brother? Because he discovered who you are?”

“I didn’t kill your brother.”

Scoffing, I say, “The evidence would suggest otherwise.”

Gideon smiles. “Raimondo is a good copycat. You have your uncle to thank for your ascension to the throne.”

“My uncle?” My gaze flicks to Carina.

She gives an almost imperceptible nod, and my stomach sinks.

Uncle Ray killed Tony? Why the fuck would…

You have your uncle to thank for your ascension to the throne.

Gideon not only told me who really murdered Tony, but also why. He wanted me to take over New York. He said so a million times. I just never believed he’d take it upon himself to make it happen.

But yes. It’s true. He killed Tony and put the blame on Black.

It’s as if my brother has died all over again. The knife in my chest twists from this fresh betrayal.

“Where is Ray?” I demand.

“Dead,” he says casually as he brushes some invisible particle from his suit. “I did consider giving you the honors, but seeing as we’re not friends, I didn’t feel like I owed it to you.” He shrugs.

I tighten my hand around the hilt of the knife I have hidden in my sleeve. That death should have been mine. I should have been the one to end him.
