Dani,a.k.a.Rose,wavesover her shoulder as she walks away, using Joel and Delilah’s departure to make her escape. As I watch her leave, my eyes automatically move to her ass. I can’t help it; I’m that guy. I’ve got to admit, seeing her again is throwing me off a little. I was shocked when I saw her a second time six months ago, but to see her again now…World, what the fuck are you trying to tell me?

Dani’s eyes find mine at the last second before she jumps in her car, and I flash her an innocent grin, as if I hadn’t spent the last minute ogling her amazing body and the fact that she’s curvy in all the right places and looks incredible in tight jeans.

When we first met, I noticed her in a ‘she’s hot, I’d tap that’ kind of way. But then at the beach, when I saw her again, I had to agree with Lucy. I’m not the right guy for her, not by a long shot, and yet, there’s something in the back of my mind telling me to fuck the rules and spend time with her anyway.

It’s odd. I usually only have three boxes for women—yes, nope, and she’s a friend so stay the fuck away. Dani doesn’t fit into any of these boxes. She’s a friend of a friend, sure, but there’s more to it.

Lucy waves her hand in front of my face, drawing my attention away from the driveway, where Dani’s long gone.

“Alright, back inside for you,” she says, grabbing me by the ear and pulling me into the house. “What did you do when you were alone? Why’d she run off like that?”

I huff out a laugh and raise my hands in innocence. “Nothing. We just talked. And even if therewasmore, she’s old enough to make her own decisions.”

“She is, she’s just…” she trails off. What?! What is she?I want to beg Lucy to tell me, but if Dani wanted me to know, she would have told me herself.

“You’re an amazing friend, Logan. I don’t mind if you offer her that. But you’re a fucking asshole when it comes to women—”

“I—”

“Don’t even try to deny it.”

“I wasn’t going to. I was going to say—I’m fine with just being her friend.”Not that we’re even that.

“Well, okay then.” Lucy’s brows furrow but then she nods, and I can’t help but add…

“Unless she wants me for more.” I bounce my eyebrows and slap my chest with my palms just as Summer and Dylan walk into the room.

“Ugh, Logan. One day, some woman’s going to have you dropping to your knees for her,” Summer says, catching the end of our conversation.

“Hey! I do that. I’m not a selfish lover.”

Dylan hides a laugh as Summer’s face crinkles in disgust. “I didn’t mean that in a sexual way.”

“I know, Sum. But it’s me. What did you expect me to say?”

“He’s got a point, Sum,” Dylan says, having my back, so I offer him a fist bump. Our friendship came out of nowhere, and it honestly shocked the hell out of me. I’d assumed he’d hate me because of my relationship with Summer, but that’s not the case. It’s obvious to everyone that I’m not a threat, but still, a lot of people get intimidated by their girls having guy best friends. Although, he is an NFL player who I have no doubt is about to become a star, so he has that up on me. He’s definitely the much better option.

“When do you officially move here?” Dylan asks, changing the subject with a grin. I mouth a thank you before answering out loud.

“As soon as I find a place, I guess. But I have to be here by January. My stuff is mostly all packed, so if my landlord finds someone to take over the lease before I find an apartment, I’ll have to move in with my parents. Something I’d rather avoid.”

I made the decision to move back to my hometown after discovering I had a brother, Liam, that I never knew existed. One that mymomnever knew existed. He’s five this year and a little champion. Living eight hours away wasn’t going to work if I wanted to get to know him. So, I’m on the hunt for a new place.

Since they all only found out about my plans tonight, it’s been a hot topic of conversation.

“Why wouldn’t you want to move in with your parents? You’d get to see Liam every day,” Summer questions with a confused expression, makingmeconfused. Of all people, she’s the one I’d expect to be understanding about not wanting to be around family. And she knows my issue with my dad. Yes, it would be a bonus to see my little bro more often, but I’m still not over what Dad did. I’d rather not have to play happy families.

“I just prefer my own place,” I say, without going into detail.

“Understandable,” Lucy says, nibbling on some leftover dessert. “You’ve been on your own for a while. Moving back with them would be hard. But what about your studies? You didn’t start until after surfing, right? So, aren’t you still finishing up?” she asks, always the mother figure.

“Don’t worry your pretty face. I’ll make sure I finish my course,” I say with a sigh, as she lightly punches me in the arm, making me laugh.

“Nice one, but you’ve got more power than that, haven’t you?” I joke, lifting my sleeve for her to get a better shot.

She punches me again, much harder than the first time, and I actually rub my arm where she connected. “I’ve sort of started learning. I'm really enjoying it,” she says, shadowboxing on the spot.

Summer’s eyes light up, obviously interested in that, too, and they start making plans, leaving Dylan and me to talk football.
