Lucy’s eyes flash to mine as she gives me a death stare and groans out a “Why?”

“Why what?” I ask innocently, knowing full well what she’s asking.

“Why is Summer coming? Aren’t you all leaving early tomorrow morning?”

“For the same reason as me. She wants to see you before we go.”

Lucy pouts. “I hate that I can’t come, but you don’t have to feel guilty for going without me. I told Summer that when she came overyesterday. I’m behind at work, so that’s going to keep me busy, and Da…I’ll be fine. Just make sure you send me photos.”

I ignore the fact that I’m pretty sure she was about to mention Dani, and instead broach the topic she hates. “You don’t need to be working so much, Luce. You’re taking on too much right now.”

She shrugs. “Maybe so, but I need to do this. For my sanity. So can you please drop it?”

“Okay, okay. I’ll stop pitying you for choosing work over Cory and Nate’s wedding andVegas, Baby, Vegas.”

I yell my last few words and laugh as Lucy rolls her eyes.

“Ugh. I think I’ll stay with you, Luce,” Summer says, letting herself in like I did. Sans pizza. “I won't be able to deal if you're going to be sayingVegas, Babythe whole time, Logan.”

Ignoring Summer’s rant, I keep my focus on Lucy and frown. “You know, you really should lock your door, Luce,” I say with a fake scolding tone, but she waves me off.

“I knew you were coming. Saves me from having to get up.”

I nod with a laugh because her logic makes sense and then turn to Summer. “As for you, I will be saying it all weekend, and you have to be there. So, ha!” I poke my tongue out, and she shakes her head at me, trying to bite back a smile.

After moving on from that conversation and avoiding others, Summer and I order a pizza as Lucy sets up a movie, which we ignore. We talk instead about everything except Dani and the custody hearing. And when Lucy starts yawning, we say our goodbyes and head home, promising to send her so many photos she’ll be sick of them.

I bounce out of bed the next morning, excited for a road trip. “Vegas, Baby, Vegas,” I say to no one, as I throw some clothes in a bag, preparing myself to say it as often as possible just to annoy Summer.

Speaking of Summer, she honks her car horn promptly at seven, despite being aware that I can only hear it when the window is open. And lucky for her it is.

As soon as I jump in the back seat, Cory turns around and calls out, “Vegas, Baby!” before cheering out loud, and I bark out a laugh as a warmth takes over me, loving the absolute joy and love in her eyes.

“Are you ready to take the plunge?” I ask Nate as we begin our long journey.

He laughs with affection before smiling toward the front seat. “I’ve been trying to get Cory to elope since the day I proposed. She’s been making me wait.”

“Sounds like Cory,” I say with a shrug.

“Hey!” Cory spins around in her seat, but the seatbelt locks on her, and she can’t look me in the eye. “I take offense to that.”

“You once made me wait three weeks for my birthday present.”

“That’s because I was waiting for your birthday.”

“Yes, but you kept bringing it up, telling me you wanted to give it to me so badly.”

Nate’s hands fly in the air. “Yes! That’s what she did to me. She’d say, ‘I wish we were married,’ but when I said, ‘Let's do it,’ she’d say we should wait.” He’s clearly joking around, and Cory knows it because she tries to hide her giggle.

“I’m right here.”

“And I love you, Little Bit.”

“Mmm, lucky.”

Though it’s a long drive, the time goes relatively quickly. And when Joel and Delilah catch up with us on his motorcycle, I manage to wrangle myself a ride, making the time fly by even faster.

We pull into our hotel late afternoon and find Thomas waiting in reception, having flown in from Seattle.
