“Nah, fuck that,” he continues as though he’s forgotten I’m actually on the line. “That will never work. And my chest…fuck. My heart’s racing so hard. But that’s gotta be because I’m finally talking to you, right? It can’t be the other thing.”

My own heart stops, and a slight panic takes over.“What do you mean, Logan? What’s the other thing?”

He pauses again and then sighs. “I’m fine. You know me, I’malwaysfine. I just miss you, and it hurts.”

“What hurts? Logan, has something happened?”

He chuckles, but it’s somewhat menacing. “Of course, you would think something happened. I loved you formonths, and you thought it was a game. Can’t you see it?”

Oh God. I sit up straight and clutch the phone tightly in place.

“I see it, Logan. And deep down I always knew. I was just scared. But that’s not what I meant. I trust you. But I need to know, what’s hurting?”

“Myheart, Dani. My heart hurts. But I’m sure that’s just from being away from you.”

A shiver runs through me and I feel like I’m going to vomit. Jumping up from the couch, I walk quietly toward Lucy’s room as I continue to talk, nervous about where this conversation is heading. Has he taken something? I’m sure I’ve heard that drugs can make your heart beat erratically.

Trying to remain calm, when I’m very muchnotcalm, I slow my pace and take a deep breath. “Is there something else it could be?”

“What?”

“What else could be hurting your heart?”

I need him to tell me so I can figure out how to get him help.

“Fuck, I love you, Dani. Have I ever actually said that? Because I should have. Every day, I should have been telling you that.”

“Logan, I—”

“Jesus, I feel faint. Why do people drink? Do people like losing their mind, or having their heart race, or the tingling sensation that takes over?”

I reach Lucy’s room and knock a few times, hoping that’s enough to wake her up. “I’m not sure that happens to everyone,” I say. “What else do you feel?”

Lucy opens her door with a sleepy look on her face; her hair’s a mess, and she’s mumbling about being woken up. But one look at the panic in my expression, and she pauses.

Logan groans but doesn’t say anything else, and I start to hyperventilate.

“Logan. I need you to talk to me. Where are you?”

“Uh, I don’t feel good, Dani.”

“That’s understandable. You’ve been drinking, you—”

“No, Dani. I don’t think that’s it.”

“Have you taken something, maybe? Could someone have drugged you?”

Lucy’s eyes widen before they start to water, only now understanding the severity of the situation. Logan doesn’t answer me. Instead, he starts rambling, but I can’t understand him.

“Logan, please—”

“It’s my heart. I’ve got a heart condition. I…fuuuck.”

“Logan!”

Lucy races to my side and tilts her head toward my phone just as Logan rasps, “I’m sorry.”

“What’s going on?” she whispers. “Dani, what’s happening?”
