Page 106 of It Had To Be Us

I put the phone on speaker and call out to Logan again but get no response.

“Logan, please. Logan!”

Lucy grabs my hand as we both stare down at the phone.

“Logan, you better answer her. You’re scaring us.”

We hear a crackling and then a sharp breath. “Lucy?”

Lucy and I simultaneously sigh in relief at the sound of his voice, but before either of us can respond, the phone disconnects.

“Logan!” I scream, as I frantically call him back and burst into tears. “What happened, Lucy?” I say between sobs. “Did you know?”

She starts shaking her head before I have the question out and then runs back into her room, returning with her phone to her ear. “Pick up. Come on, Dylan. Pick up.”

I dial Logan again and again, but he never answers, and I feel completely useless. He’s sick? How did Inotknow that?

“Dylan didn’t answer,” Lucy says, sounding a lot calmer than I am as I stare off into space. “I’ll try the others,” she continues. “Do you have anyone’s number? Sorry, why would you? I—”

“Joel’s,” I blurt out, suddenly remembering. “I have Joel’s number.” I have it for Liam.

I call Joel as Lucy calls Summer and then Delilah. Of all people, it’s a drunk Thomas that answers. “Luucccyy!” he yells, even though it sounds quiet in the background.

Lucy cringes but takes a deep breath and smiles at me, squeezing my arm.

“Thomas, I need you to pause and listen carefully.”

Thomas chuckles. “Okay, Luce. Hit me.”

“Logan’s in trouble. Do you know where he is?”

“Huh? No, he’s not. I was just with him.”

Okay, that’s good news. Right?

“Where? Thomas, where were you?”

We hear a door open followed by a tap running, and I’m about to yell at him to hurry up, but he finally says, “At the hotel.”

“Good, thank you. Do you know where Dylan’s room is?”

“Uh, next door.”

I release a breath and nod at Lucy.Small wins.

Lucy crosses her fingers as she speaks. “I need you to go and wake them up. Ask Dylan to call me. It’s urgent.”

Thomas hisses. “Fuck, Luce. You’re serious, aren’t you?”

“I am.”

The sound of movement and static comes through the speaker as Thomas presumably runs, and just as it all goes quiet, we hear him practically banging down Dylan’s door, yelling for him to open up.

Dylan’s voice finally comes through the line, making my chest loosen a little as I breathe out in relief. It’s not over yet, but at least Logan has help.

“We need you to get into Logan’s room,” Lucy tells Dylan, and then without waiting for an answer, adds, “Does Summer know he has a heart condition?”

Summer gasps, and Dylan swears, but neither of them answer. Instead, Dylan says, “We’re on it. We’ll call you right back,” beginning the most heart-wrenching wait I’ve ever experienced.
