Dani shakes her head, her gaze moving to the carpet as she laughs. “I’m sure it’s always been like that for you.”Hell, no.
Grabbing her chin again, I turn her toward me until she gives in and looks me in the eye. “It’sneverbeen like that for me. Except the other times withyou. Don’t you get it? This is us. And every part of me is yours.”
She nods, a shy smile still in place. “Every part of me is yours too.”
I can’t stop myself from kissing her again. In fact, I could do this forever. And I plan to. It’s not going to be easy, and we still have a lot to get through, but who wants easy? No matter what happens, one thing is clear. I’ve finally found my reason again.
“What’s next?” Dani asks when we’re curled up on the couch together, an hour later. “Do you want to officially find out about Liam before you tell him?”
That’s the big question, isn’t it. “I think we'll probably have to go down that path for legal reasons, but to me, it doesn’t matter. Either way, he’s ours,” I say as I roll over and grip her thigh, smiling when I hear her breath hitch. She repositions herself to face me too, and our noses almost touch, making it really hard not to kiss her again. But that can wait. She looks like she has something to say.
“You’ll make a great dad, Logan,” she rasps, barely above a whisper. “I have no doubt.”
My chest tightens, because fuck, I hope she’s right, but I’m nervous as hell. “Oh, yeah?” I say with a smirk, hiding my concern. “You want to have kids with me?” I wait for a smart-ass comment in return but instead, Dani freezes like a deer in headlights.Shit! “I’m kidding, I’m not ready for that.”
“And if I’m never ready for that?” she asks with an uncertain edge to her tone.
“That’s okay,” I say honestly. “Because we’ve got Liam. And right now, our family of three is pretty fucking perfect. Even if he doesn’t know it.”
Dani smiles at me, still a little unsure. “Question?”
“Yes, Dani. If we break up, not that I think we ever will, but no matter what, you’ll never lose Liam.”
“W-what?” she stutters, even more nervously. “That wasn’t what I was going to ask.”
I can’t help but chuckle. “I know. I just wanted to put your mind at ease in case. You’re never getting rid of me, anyway.”
She slaps my hand that’s still wrapped around her thigh, and squeezes me tighter, making me shiver.
“What were you actually going to ask?” I say seriously, now sorry I made a joke.
“Never mind, it doesn’t matter.”
“It does matter. It always matters. What was it?”
“I was going to ask why your mom didn’t just tell you about Liam, instead of going through with the custody case? Why continue to keep it a secret?”
I sigh because I asked her this very thing, along with why she didn’t think to tell me considering she knew I was in love with Dani.
“She tried to tell me when she was first hit with the court papers, but I joked about not being ready. I told her if I was her, I’d hand Liam over to you. Apparently, that made her nervous. Along with the fact that she’d been keeping it a secret for so long she was scared of how I’d react.”
“Jesus,” Dani whispers, her eyes wide. “But you’re ready now?”
“With you by my side, I am. Which leads me to her other concern.”
Dani’s brows furrow. “What was that?”
“That even if you and I got together and tried raising Liam, we might not work out, and you’d take him away from us.”
“What, that’s crazy. You know that, right? I couldn’t. He’s still your son. I wouldn’t even have a claim to him.”
“You would if we got married,” I drop casually, leaving the idea hanging in the air.
Dani looks away, going silent for a second, and I swear I can hear her heart beating faster. “What?”
My dad made me question marriage, but now I kind of want to be connected to Dani in every way possible, and I want to make sure she’s protected when it comes to Liam.
Squeezing her chin, I spin her head around until she looks at me again, and brush my lips to hers. “Just something to think about. You know, to make it official for Liam.”And me.
