“I ran out of decent women to—”

“Do not finish that sentence, Logan Taylor. I don’t want a bullshit answer.”

“It’s not entirely—”

Summer shakes her head and I instantly stop talking. “Cut the crap. It’s me. What’s going on?”

Rolling my eyes, I lean into the counter and scoff. “I have way too many women in my life these days.”

Summer’s lips pull into a sassy grin and she scoffs right back at me. “You mean other than the ones moving through your revolving door.”

“Yes, Summer. And I specifically meanyou,Del,andLucy. Cory, I like. She keeps her opinions to herself.”

She laughs as she pours herself a water and turns back to look at me. “If you didn’t love strong opinionated women, we never would have become friends. So, stop complaining and answer my question.”

I don’t know what to say. The decision to move home came from a buildup of things, but the icing on the cake was definitely my mom. I can’t put my finger on what it is, but something feels off when I speak to her. Yes, I know her husband cheated on her and now she’s raising his kid, but I don’t think that’s it. I just haven’t figured out what. And something is screaming at me to be here in case whatever it is blows up.

Why I can’t tell Summer that, though, I’m not sure.

“I never had a sibling. I don’t want to miss out, now that I do,” I say instead, and it’s not exactly a lie. Only seeing Liam once a month, when I visit, isn’t enough.

Summer nods, seemingly dropping the question, and I inwardly sigh as she moves next to me to set her glass in the sink. “Well, whatever it is, I’m excited. It will be nice to have you around more.”

I scruff up her hair with my palm until she shoves me away. “I love you too, Summer.”

On my long drive home, I listen to my classic rock playlist until the urge to switch to movie songs takes over. I’m still so tired that I don’t figure outwhyuntil the song “Greased Lightnin’” comes on, and I bark out a laugh.

Without thinking much of it, I pull over and shoot Dani a text.

Logan: Can I draw you? Like one of my French girls

I don’t expect her to reply, so when the dots appear, my eyes widen.

Dani: Only if you show me some action down below

I burst out laughing, burying my face in my hands. She’s gotta be messing with me, right? I’ve seen the movie, so I know what she’s referring to, but still…the accidental innuendo is killing me.Slowly.

Dani’s not like anyone I’ve ever met. She comes across as shy and maybe a little awkward, but I can see this hidden strength she’s trying to hide. I noticed it on the beach the day we don’t speak about, and then saw it again last night.

I wish I knew what she’d been through to send off those vibes. Or even why I’m so desperate to find out. But what I do know is that I don’t want tonight to be the last time I see her, and something tells me it won’t be.

Chapter Four

Logan

“Whydoyouhaveso much stuff? Weren’t you in a studio apartment?” Summer says, lifting another box out of the U-Haul truck I rented before placing it on the ground. It’s been a month and a half since Thanksgiving, and I’d expected to be here earlier, but it didn’t work out as planned.

Joel laughs as he piles three boxes on top of each other, shuffling past Summer, as both of them help me unpack. “Summer, he’s got nothing on the amount of crap you had when you moved in with me,” he says, referring to when Summer moved into Dylan’s room in the house he shared with Joel. Dylan currently lives in Denver, playing for their pro football team.

“Yeah, but I moved my entire life there,” Summer argues. “I’ve got nothing left at my parents' place, remember?”

I frown at that, hating the thought of what happened between Summer and her family, but quickly laugh to lighten the mood since she still doesn’t like talking about it.

“And you think what? That my parents keep setting up a room for me every time they move?” I ask, my brows rising in question.

Summer shrugs as she climbs back onto the bed of the truck. “I guess not. This just seems excessive. And the boxes are. Heavier. Than. Mine,” she huffs out as she exerts herself trying to lift another box before attempting to drag it, then giving up completely when it won’t budge, stamping her foot in frustration.

Joel looks at the label and bursts out laughing while I bite back a grin.
