Her eyes widen as if she still doesn’t believe me about Liam, and I know then and there I’ll do anything to put her mind at ease.

She opens her mouth to protest but I kiss her again, cutting her off, putting all my emotions into the touch. Making sure she knows what I feel, not just my words.

“But, Dani?” I say against her lips, my voice stern, making her jump.

“Yes?” she breathes out.

“Piece of paper or not, you’re Liam’s and you’re mine for the rest of our lives. Got it?”

Her eyes light up until they're practically ablaze and she smiles. “Got it,” she says, making me crash my lips back to hers in another bruising kiss as the thought of forever hits me.God, I fucking love her.

We make out for a while, but when Dani’s stomach starts to rumble, I jump up and pull her to her feet, dragging her toward the kitchen. As we walk in silence, a thought crosses my mind and I can’t stop myself from chuckling.

“I feel like Judd Nelson at the end ofThe Breakfast Club. Life is still a little fucked-up…okay, a lot fucked-up. But I’m a changed man and I got the girl. You can be Molly Ringwald watching me as I pump my fist into the air while ‘Don’t You Forget About Me’ plays in the background.”

I do just that, fist pumping the air and even adding the freeze frame at the end for effect, making Dani stop.

She jokingly rolls her eyes, and my lips pull into a crooked grin. “Hmmm. First,” she says, with a raised eyebrow, “it’s Claire and Bender, and is he really a changed man in the end?”

I raise an eyebrow back and frown. “In my eyes, yes, he absolutely is.”

Dani laughs but shakes her head, giving my hand a tug to start walking again. “Why can’t we be Dani and Logan?” she asks as we settle in her kitchen. “I may like our little character game, but right now, I feel like being us.”

I contemplate that idea with my hand on my chin. “I do like those names, but I haven’t seen that movie, and they don’t have a song,” I joke with a serious expression, only smiling when Dani bursts out laughing again.

“Okay, what about Anna and William fromNotting Hill?” I offer instead, singing “When You Say Nothing At All,” by Ronan Keating.

Dani shakes her head with a suppressed smile. She’s really not going to move past the Dani and Logan idea.

“What about you write us our own song,” she says with a smile. “And then we can be ourselves.”

I raise an eyebrow as my lips curl into a cocky grin. “You think I could write a good song?”

“No,” she says without hesitation. “But I’m sure that’s never stopped you before.”

I bark out a laugh though a little part of me wants to prove her wrong. Something to think about in the future.

“You’re right, but no, that won’t do. How about…” I trail off trying to think of a better idea. There have to be some characters that fit, I…

A lightbulb goes off in my head and I snap my fingers, excited with who I’ve come up with. “I know! You’re Sally, and I’m Harry,” I say with a wide grin. "When Harry Met Sally."

“Okay,” Dani smiles. “I’m listening. Why?”

“Because out of all the people in the world…it had to be you. There’s no one else I’d want to do life with.” I smile proudly but watch as confusion crosses her face. I’m about to explain it to her when another idea comes to mind and I start singing, “It Had To Be You,” because God, does it fit for us.

Dani laughs out loud, wrapping her arms around my waist as I sing. And when I hit the chorus again, an adorable little smile lights up her face.

“I think you mean…it had to be us?” she says, reminding me of something we once talked about. “Because let’s face it, we’re both as messed up as the other.”

Never has there been a truer statement. “Sally, I think you’re right. So, how about that role play?”

She pushes me away and runs down the hall, food all but forgotten. I chase after her, lifting her into my arms before flipping her over my shoulder, loving the little giggle that comes flying from her mouth.

“Okay, we’re a family—a messed-up family. But no role play,” she says between laughs as my heart pounds in my chest. For good reason this time.

Because suddenly everything feels right in the world, exactly as it should be. I’m more than ready to begin the next phase of my life with Dani and Liam by my side, and I’m prepared to tackle anything life throws at us. Because no matter what happens from here, thisis meant to be.

“Fine, no role play,” I say, flipping her onto the bed. “But Sally, how do you feel about dirty talk?”
