Right, yes, well obviously I do, but…

“I’m sorry, but I have a call to make,” I say, shocking the girls and myself in the process. When disappointment flashes across their faces, I add, “But I’m in for Thursday,” to soften the blow.

“Perfect,” the blonde says and they walk away, both looking over their shoulders as they do.

I don’t even wait for their door to click shut before I close mine and look down at my phone, a smile playing on my lips. Ignoring her text, I dial Dani’s number with the girls next door now far from my mind.

“Hello?” she answers hesitantly, and I bite back a laugh.

“Charlie! I’m just returning your call,” I say, playing dumb.

“Oh, um, didn’t you get my message after?”

“I didn’t, sorry,” I lie, because for some reason a text exchange wasn’t enough. “What’s up?”

Dani slowly releases a breath. “It was a mistake. An error. A slip of the finger. So, you can get back to whatever it is you were doing. I was just saying thanks.”

My eyes flash toward the adjoining wall…Yes, I could. I really could, and yet…

“What are you up to?” I ask, dropping onto my couch and putting my feet up.

Dani’s silent for a moment before responding with, “I was just getting into the bath, actually,” and I have to bite back a groan.

Goddammit. My pants tighten instantly at that visual and I need more.

“What do you plan ondoingin that bath?” I ask, before a thought comes to mind. “Actually, don’t tell me. I’m on my way. Just text me your address.”

Dani laughs, and the sound doesn’t help my cause as it travels right through me. “I’m going to read a book and may even wash myself,” she says, ignoring the part about me coming over. “We’ll see.”

“Willwesee?” I ask, and fuck, I hope so because I’ve just decided that I would really like that to happen.

Dani huffs out another laugh. “Wewon't. I meant me.Alone.” She emphasizes the last point, and disappointment swarms me. Not that I can do anything about it other than laugh, becauseweknew that was going to be her answer.

“That’s a shame. It could have been fun,” I say as if I could change her mind.

“Logan…” she draws out, ready to knock me down.

“Maverick,” I counter.

She doesn’t react to what I’ve said, but I can hear the smile in her voice when she changes my name. “Maverick, I’m going to go. This body won’t relax itself.”

Jesus! What I wouldn’t give to be the one taking on that task.

Lucy’s bullshit reasoning aside, I have to have this girl. Nothing seems complicated at all. Maybe what she really needs is to let loose. And who better to help her than me?

“Enjoy your alone time, Charlie. I look forward to our next run-in.” One that I might have to orchestrate.

Chapter Seven

Dani

MyphoneringsasI’m running into the arts building on Thursday night, and Jenny’s name appears on the screen. I smile instantly as I picture my nephew holding the phone to his little ear.

“Hello,” I say politely, in case I’m wrong and it’s Jenny, but when his sweet little voice comes through the line, my smile widens.

“Dani, I went to the movies today,” he says with awe in his tone, making my heart soar.

“You did? Wow! Was that your first time?”
