Page 21 of It Had To Be Us

It’s strange that Liam’s five yet I’m only just getting to know him, and it breaks my heart to think that I only found out he existed because my sister died. Guilt rises to the surface once again, but it shouldn’t. We’d never had a great relationship. My mom and stepdad—her dad—always expected me to parent her, even from a young age, and she hated that. It never allowed us to build a solid sister to sister foundation, and when I moved out, we kind of stopped speaking. I tried a few times to contact her, but she moved away almost six years ago and never told me where. She even changed her number. It was like she didn’t want to be found. And with the timing of everything, I have to wonder if Liam was the reason. But why?

“Uh-huh, first time ever!” Liam exclaims, his loud voice breaking into my thoughts. “Can you take me this weekend, Dani? Can I go again?” His excited voice makes it impossible to say no, not that I would have anyway.

“Of course we can. I’ll be there in the morning on Sunday, like always.”

Liam’s dad and stepmom got in touch with me last month after apparently trying to track me down for a while. While I’m not thrilled about the fact that Liam’s dad is a middle-aged man and has a wife that he cheated on, I’m still grateful they found me, because now that I know about Liam, I couldn’t imagine my life without him.

He cheers out a thanks before hanging up the phone, and I can’t help but laugh. He said what he had to say and now he’s done.Bye, Liam.

It’s hard to look at him now and not be saddened by the loss of my sister, but a little part of me wonders if I would have even found out about him if she was still alive.

When I make it into the music room, my usual bean bag is ready for me. After waving to the guys, I lie back and adjust my dress before lifting the headphones over my ears. My eyes close, and with a simple rise of my finger, the music begins, the notes flowing through me. When the vocals hit, I actually sigh in happiness. Pulling my lips into a smile, I give the crew a thumbs-up and relax back into my comfortable position, content to allow the music to consume me.

I’m completely lost in the moment when someone kicks my foot, and I startle, my eyes flying open.

Looking up, I see Logan hovering above me, a megawatt smile on his face.

“Kat! It’s you. I’ve been trying to track you down.”

Kat? My brows pull in confusion as I subtly adjust my dress, making sure it hasn’t ridden up, suddenly self-conscious about my attire.

Logan frowns, as his head tilts to the side. “You don’t remember me? Hang on, I’ll see if I can jog your memory.” He says the last of it in a somewhat decent Australian accent, and it hits me. I see what he’s doing. He’s Patrick from10 Things I Hate About You. This is our thing.Wait, we have a thing?

Even though I’ve figured it out, I wait patiently to see what he’s going to do. And what he does is so unexpected, my jaw actually drops.

Reaching down, he lifts one of the college’s acoustic guitars into his hands and winks at me before he starts to play.Logan plays guitar. Really freaking well.Dammit.

I’m not sure how to feel about this revelation, but I know it has my heart racing. Especially with the way his penetrating eyes stare into mine while his lips mouth the words to the song, “Can’t Take My Eyes Off You,” by Frankie Valli.

I give him a little chuckle to disguise my feelings and move to stand up. Of course, it’s impossible to be graceful on a beanbag and I fall back, my dress lifting up to flash the world, and more specifically, Logan.

When I look up, I catch his eyes widening as his gaze moves between my legs, and based on his expression, I have no doubt he’s seen a hint of my panties under my sheer tights. Black satin panties to be exact.

Righting myself, I awkwardly roll to get my bearings and stand up, flattening out my dress.

I expect Logan to laugh, throw out a teasing comment, or, at the very least, smirk. But he doesn’t…at all. His blue eyes dilate, and his hands hover over the guitar as if frozen in the last position they were in. It’s a few seconds before he shakes off his thoughts and leans in close. So close, it has every one of my senses on high alert. Is he going to kiss me? He’s going to kiss me. I don’t think I want him to kiss me. God, please don’t kiss me.

Logan’s nose touches mine, and he smiles. “Your eyes have a little green in them.”

I burst out laughing because they definitely don’t. My eyes are as brown as they come. But he’s breaking the tension and keeping up his Patrick Verona persona, and I love it.Ooh, that rhymes.

Clicking my fingers, I point to Logan as my face lights up with an over-the-top smile. “I remember you now. Patrick, right?”

Logan, a.k.a. Patrick, bounces his eyebrows and grins. “That’s me. I’m actually shocked to see you—”

“Dani! You still want to hear the next one?” my friend Axel calls out from the room where he’s practicing with his band. Like always, his eyes twinkle with mischief, so when he notices Logan beside me, he bites his bottom lip and curls his finger seductively.

“Hell yes, I do. I’ll just be a minute.”

Logan’s eyes bounce between mine and Axel’s until he disappears back inside their room.

“Ahh, what’s that about?” Logan asks, still facing the doorway.

“I’m just helping out a friend.”

His gaze shifts and I follow it, watching out of the corner of my eye as he glares through the window. Of course, Axel chooses that moment to wink at me and I roll my eyes, knowing exactly what he’s doing.

“A friend?” Logan asks curiously and then laughs, shaking off his weirdness. “A friend. Good. Maybe you can introduce me to them so we can jam sometime.”
