I nervously laugh at his sudden change in demeanor, nodding like I’m crazy. “Yep, I can do that. But first, I…ahh…better get back to it, or I’ll have three guys on my ass later.”

I point to the guys in the room, to find two of them looking my way. When my gaze moves back to Logan, he has the strangest expression on his face. It’s a mix between shock and amusement, and I have no idea why. His lips pull into a crooked grin before he scratches the back of his head. “Yep, I’ll…leave you to it then,” he says, taking a step away. “I should get back to my friends, anyway.” He throws his hand up in the direction of two stunning women behind him—who already have their eyes directed his way—then smiles.

An uncomfortable feeling settles in my stomach, and my pulse quickens, but like every other time…I ignore it. “Okay. I’ll chat with you later.”

Without waiting for a response, I wave to the guys and secure the headphones back in place. The music starts almost instantly, and my body feels normal again. My pulse slows, the thoughts in my head settle, and the beat takes over.

I’m feeling good until the guitarist swaps to acoustic, and my mind drifts to Logan. Of course, he had to be a musician—a hot, tattooed, surfer that plays guitar. My God!Music is my weakness. It always has been, and I’ve been trying so hard…

Guilt once again consumes me, leaving me breathless, my lungs suddenly constricting at the mere thought. I can’t do this. I can’t.

Dropping the headphones, I rush to the door, needing air.

The second I push outside, I feel a presence behind me and pray that it’s not him. Please, please, don’t be him.

“Was it that bad?” Axel asks, placing a hand on my shoulder.

My relieved sigh is so loud, I almost apologize for it. Instead, I huff out a laugh and turn around. “No, it was amazing, I just—”

Axel’s eyes widen, and he cuts me off. “Shit.Fuck. That was track five. We weren’t going to play that for you yet. At least, not until we spoke to you about it.”

“What? Why?”

He shoots me a puzzled look that quickly turns to a grin. “Were you even listening to the track? Or is this about the guy?”

“What guy?” I ask innocently, even though we both know who he means.

Axel raises an eyebrow. He may not know me that well, but he’s not blind.

“I’m sorry. I was listening; I promise. I just have a lot going on, and my thoughts drifted.”

“From music?”

I laugh with equal disbelief. “I know. I’m as shocked as you are.” I shrug.

Axel gives me a sympathetic smile and pats my shoulder. “Must be something important.”

“Maybe,” I say, though I don’t really know what it is.

“Do you want to listen again?Afterwe give you a quick rundown of the song?”

My lips pull into a small, nervous grin. “Absolutely.”

The song ends, and I have tears in my eyes. This is music at its purest form. True storytelling. “Use that one,” I say, wiping my eyes as I join the guys in the room. “That’s the one.”

They celebrate their small win with subdued expressions. They’ve been trying to decide on a song to use for their final college performance, and they just found it. But it’s an emotional one for all involved. It’s a tribute to Eric, and it’s freaking phenomenal. While Eric never understood my deep connection and love of music, he had an eye for dollar signs. So when he heard these guys playing in their family’s garage on our street, he gave them a lot of attention. They were all seventeen and still deciding what to do with their lives, and somehow decided to take the study route, rather than trying their luck in the music world. I admire them for that. And that’s why we’re here now. In the final year of their degrees.

“Why is it you never studied music?” Axel asks once things have settled down.

“Ahh… probably because I have no talent.” I laugh, my eyes narrowing when he scoffs.

“That’s not true at all. You could be a producer. You have the ear for it.”

That might be true. My dad was a big-name European producer in his younger years, but…

“Music is my escape. If I turn it into my job, that will all change.”

“You’re right about that. Music doesn’t mean the same to me now that I’m being tested on it. But if it’s something you love…”
