Logan’s back stiffens and he frowns. “No, I’m not.” He shrugs as though it’s no big deal, but since his mood changed so quickly, I decide to leave the question alone. There’s obviously a story there that doesn’t come with a happy ending.

“So, you don’t paint then?” I ask to redirect the conversation.

Logan laughs like I hoped he would and shakes his head. “Not even a little; I saw you walk in here.”

Chapter Eight

Logan

WhydoIsuddenlywish I could paint? I’ve never thought about doing it before, but now, I feel like parking my ass at the easel next to Dani and losing my mind in the colors.Jesus Christ.I need to get out of here.

“Anyway, I’ll—”

“Yeah, your friends are probably waiting.”

Friends? What—

“Logan, are you coming?” Oh right, friends.Wait, was that jealousy in her tone?I search her face for any sign of it but only get a raised eyebrow in return.Just my imagination then.

“Okay, I’ll be seeing you.”

I back out of the room with my eyes still locked on hers. Like I’m waiting for something, only I’m not sure what. I’ve just reached the doorway when arms wrap around me from behind and hands start running up and down my chest. Dani immediately looks away as if broken from a spell, and I flinch, quickly removing the hands before turning around.

“Are you ready to hang out some more?” Skye asks while Kaitlin smiles beside her.

My gut reaction is no, but that’s crazy, right? Why wouldn’t I be ready to hang out some more?

“Ahh, yep. One sec.”

One sec? What do I need to do?

The girls start talking like they actually expect me to go and do something before it’s time to leave. But I have nothing. My gaze roams around the room, strangely unfocused until it stops on Dani.

She’s once again entranced in the music, just like she was when I arrived earlier today. Only this time, I don’t have a view of her perfect legs, like I did when she was lying on the beanbag.

I hadn’t planned on interrupting her then, but I couldn’t seem to stop myself, just like I can’t stop myself now as I walk toward her and tap her on the shoulder, once again making her jump.

“Kat,” I say, with no real purpose for being here.

She looks up at me through her black-framed glasses, her forehead creased in confusion. “Patrick?”

Why am I here? What the fuck is going on? Walk the fuck away.

“You were going to introduce me to the band.”What? Shit.I was only making conversation when I said that.

Dani’s eyes widen as she pushes back her chair. “I was! Let me see if they’re still here.”

She jumps up, a little flustered, and walks around me to get to the door.

Acting on impulse, I grab her waist as she moves past, pulling her into me. Her hands shoot out to brace herself, landing on my chest, and she looks up at me through beautiful thick lashes, something I hadn’t noticed before. She blinks a few times, slowly, before squeezing her eyes shut and shaking her head as my pulse spikes.

“Sorry, I was joking. I don’t really jam with others. I usually just play for myself,” I say as an excuse for stopping her.

Dani blindly steps back a few times, almost knocking over the easel behind her, and my hands shoot out to right her, but she manages to save herself without doing too much damage. “Why’d you come today, if not to jam?”

I inwardly cringe.Good question, Dani.

“To make friends.” It’s not exactly a lie. I made friends with my neighbors. Sort of. Okay, we’re definitely not friends, but…
