Page 3 of It Had To Be Us

We’re silent after that, and it’s not comfortable but it also kind of is. As strange as that sounds.Maybe some tunes will help.I reach for the dial at the same time Danny does, and our fingers touch. Hers are warm and tiny, and I’m almost certain I could engulf her hand in the palm of mine. Yep, I could definitely tuck her under my—

“How very Hollywood movie of us,” she jokes, interrupting my thoughts, her hand firmly locked back on the steering wheel.

I can’t help but smile. “I love clichés,” I say honestly, getting an eye roll in return.

She pulls into a parking spot in front of Summer’s building and shuts off the engine before turning to face me. “So…”

“This has been fun. Shall we do it again sometime?” I ask with a cocky grin.

Danny bursts out laughing before biting her lip, drawing my attention to it. “Okay, Sandy. Thanks for the distraction and the laugh. I appreciate it. Now, it’s back to reality for me.”

“You never said what that reality was? The reason you were using me.” I smirk, trying hard not to bounce my eyebrows.

With a face void of all emotion, Danny looks me in the eye and says, “I fix cars while singing songs full of dirty innuendo.”

Just like the character. I fight to keep a straight face myself, but it’s not easy.Fuck, this girl is something else.

Taking a deep breath, I school my features, biting back my smirk. “I can see why you’d need someone to take your mind off that. Sounds like hard work.”

“Exactly,” she deadpans, but the edge of her lips pull up into a beautiful smile.

I sit for a moment, a stupid grin on my face until Danny’s eyes flash to the building in front of us and then back to me.Right, I’m meant to get out.Why aren’t I getting out?

“Thank you. For the ride. I appreciate it. Finally doing the walk of shame in style.”

Danny huffs out a laugh, tucking a loose hair behind her ear. “You’re welcome, Sandy. Now, I should be getting back. You know. To work on that pesky car.”

“Of course.” I nod with a suppressed grin. “Thanks, again.”

Faking a bow in her seat, Danny nods before turning back to the steering wheel. “It was my absolutepleasure,” she jokes, and with the way she says pleasure, I’m done. I’ve been trying to be good. I really have, but I can’t let that one fly. She’s had my mind in the gutter for the entire drive…virgin, using me, her pleasure. I can’t… “Are you doing that on purpose?”

“Doing what?” she replies innocently, leaving me with no idea if she is or not.

“Never mind,” I say, shaking my head before grabbing the door handle. “Maybe I’ll see you around.”

“Maybe you will.”

With that, I jump out of the car and run up the steps to Summer’s building. When I look back, I have to smile at Danny’s expression. Her face is a mix of relief and confusion as she rubs her temples, looking a little dazed.Maybe she’s not as immune to my charms as I thought.

When she catches me looking, she gives me an awkward grin, shaking her head. And even though there’s a good chance that I’ll never actually see her again, I kind of want to know what would happen if I did.

Chapter One

Dani - Twelve months later

“MissGreco?Didyouhear me?”

A ringing takes over my mind, and his voice comes out muffled. What did he just ask me? I drop the phone to the couch and jam my palms into my eyes to stop them from filling with tears. This isn’t real. I shouldn’t be crying.

“Miss Greco? Daniela?”

Sounds keep coming from my phone, though I’m not sure why. But the ringing won’t stop.

“Daniela, are you alone?”

Of course, I’m alone. It’s six a.m. Isn’t it? Or maybe it’s still the middle of the night and this is a vivid dream.

“Daniela, if you don’t respond, I’m going to have to call emergency services to check on you.”
