Social anxiety aside, spending time with Dwayne turns out to be more enjoyable than I would have expected, and as day turns to night, we’re still hanging out, surrounded by his teammates and alumni. I’d call today more of a carnival than an event, and I’ve actually enjoyed every second.

“I think they all bought it,” Dwayne says, whispering in my ear as we walk away from the strong man sideshow. “I’ve been getting the nodding equivalent of a pat on the back whenever a coach walks by. Thank you, Dani.”

I can’t help but smile. “You’re a good guy, Dwayne. Don’t ruin your career over silly little things.”

He nods, but it’s clear he’s not really affected by what I say. “Do you really think my drinking and sleeping around is going to stop an NFL team from signing me?” he asks, and my answer is no. He’s not hurting anyone. He’s just embarrassing himself. But I don’t say that. Instead, I give a half truth. “It might.”

“Fuck,” he curses under his breath, suddenly taking note.

“Good news is, you’ve got time to turn it around. Are you having fun today?”

He smiles brightly. “I am.”

“Then that proves you don’t need alcohol or inappropriate behavior to have fun.”

Dwayne sighs, pouting like a scolded child. “You’re probably right,” he says, pulling me into a hug. “But I like the other stuff.”

Shaking my head, I giggle at his expression and pat him on the arm. “No, I’mdefinitelyright on this one. Trust…” I trail off when I notice his body stiffen, and when I pull back to look at him, his brows are furrowed as he gazes at something over my shoulder.

“Am I about to get my ass kicked by your boyfriend?” he asks, causing me to frown. “Because I didn’t sign up for that.”

My boyfr… Looking over my shoulder, I find Logan through the crowd, his eyes locked on my waist, at the exact point that Dwayne’s fingers wrap around me. Rolling my eyes, I ignore him—and the slight increase in my heart rate—looking back at Dwayne instead. “He’s not my boyfriend. But I can’t guarantee he won’t hurt you.”

“Huh? Why?”

He steps back, dropping his hands to his sides, and I laugh. “I’m kidding. He’s not going to touch you. You’re safe.”

“I’m not worried. I was getting ready to fight back.”

Good Lord. The testosterone out here.

“Come on. Everyone is packing up anyway. It’s time we headed home.”

“Your place or mine?” Dwayne jokes, and I playfully push his chest.Am I flirting? Shit. It’s not on purpose, that’s for sure.

“We’re definitely—”

“This is where you part ways,” Logan interrupts, stepping beside me with a grumpy look on his face. I bark out a laugh because he can’t be serious right now. This version of him has come out of nowhere.

Dwayne gets his back up, standing tall and taking a step closer. “Really, man. Who do you think you—”

“Alright. Alright,” I say, arms raised as I move between them. “We’re all leaving.Separately. Come on.”

Turning abruptly, I make my way toward the parking lot, hoping like hell that at least one of them follows, otherwise they really might have a showdown.

“Wait, Dani!” Logan calls out, jogging to catch up, with Dwayne nowhere in sight. I’d be worried if I didn’t know they’d already closed the bars and most of the football team officials are long gone.

When I turn around, Logan’s staring at me expectantly, a slight frown in place.

“What was that about?” I whisper-yell, my hands moving to my hips.

“I don’t like him. I was worried?”

“Is that a question? Because you sound unsure.”

He steps forward and peers over my shoulder, bringing him much closer than I want right now. “Okay, I didn’t like the way he was touching you,” he says, his teeth clenched in anger.

“Why?” I croak out, needing to know how he feels.
