“No, I’m not.” My voice raises an octave, giving away my outright lie.

Shaking her head, she lowers herself to my couch and moans when her feet hit the footrest.

“Feel better?” I chuckle.

“Much,” she says with a smirk. “It’s been a long day. But this isn’t about me. I saw the way you were looking at her at the alumni event. Why were you there?”

“Everyone was there.”

“I saw Summer and Cory leave without you.”Dammit.

“I stayed until the end because the photographer asked to meet me up so I could get to know him.”

Lucy bites back a smirk, her expression screaming bullshit.

“Her?” I correct and wince when she bursts out laughing.

“Just admit it.”

“I’ll admit that I stayed for Dani. But only because the guy she was with looked like a jerk, and I was worried.”

Anger takes over me again as I think about it, the way his hand lingered on her body, the way she leaned into his touch, her smile—

“And you were jealous,” Lucy says, cutting into my thoughts.

“And I was jealous.Fuck!” Didn’t mean to say that. But it’s not a lie.

Lucy’s eyes light up, and it pisses me off.

“I thought I wasn’t right for her?”

She cringes. “Maybe I was a little harsh with that assessment.”

“Why the change of heart?”

“Dylan.”

My eyes widen. “Huh?”Dylan?

Lucy grins lovingly. “Yep, my baby bro. He convinced me to look past your…bedroom habits, and think about the real you.”

My chest tightens, and I’m not sure how to feel about that. I’m obviously grateful to Dylan, but why was Lucy talking about me to begin with? And was she genuinelythatworried I’d screw Dani over? Literally.Would I have?If she’d “fallen for my charms” as she put it.

“Fuck!”

I pull the bill of my hat down over my face and drop my chin to my chest. Maybe Lucy’s right, and I need to stay the fuck away from Dani. But the thought of that doesn’t sit right with me.

“What’s going on here?” Lucy asks, confusion written across her features.

“Just processing. You spoke about me?”

“We did. He joked about Thanksgiving and said Summer thought something might be sprouting between the two of you.”

Ugh. I cringe.

“Well, there's not,” I say truthfully. “There’s nothing going on. Let’s chat about something else. Like you and what you’re going to do with your life.”

“Ha ha,” Lucy deadpans, rolling her eyes.
