Guilt takes over me, and I internally wince. I have no idea about kids. But I’m trying so hard to learn. I want to be someone Liam can depend on. Should I have known he shouldn’t nap at three in the afternoon? Most likely. But I know now.

“Jenny, I’m so—”

“It’s my fault, Mom. I just can’t say no to the little guy, and he was exhausted.”

Jenny smiles, and I get the impression Logan can do no wrong. No wonder he has a semi entitled personality—assuming he’s going to win me over.

“I better get going,” I say because I’m emotionally drained. “I’ll see you next week, Liam. Do I get a hug?”

He runs into my arms but stays there for less than a second, and then he’s off. “See you all later.”

After a quick wave to Logan, I head toward my car, but he grabs hold of the door right as I’m closing it. “I never said that I’m sorry about your sister. But I am. And if Liam’s going to have any family other than us, I’m glad it’s you. You’re great with him, and he needs love in his life.”

I’m shocked into silence at his words, so it’s a short moment before I respond. And even then, all I do is blurt out a thank you and smile.

“Okay, Dani. Drive safe.”

He closes my door for me and taps my roof before I drive away. My heart beats heavily in my chest, alerting me to the fact that despite constant rejections, I am, in fact, falling for his charms, and I’m not convinced I’d resist him if he tried.

Chapter Thirteen

Logan

Daniissofarunder my skin I’m not sure I’ll ever get her out. I continuously cover up with jokes, when in reality, I can’t stop thinking about her. And because of those jokes, she may never take me seriously.

I stand frozen as she pulls out of my parents’ driveway, watching her until she’s out of sight. I’ve barely taken a step toward the house when Mom’s words pull me up. I didn’t even realize she was still out here. “How long have you known her?” she asks, her voice full of concern.Shit!

Turning around slowly, I raise my hands in the air as if I’m being questioned by police and grit my teeth in a forced grin. “Ahhh, what’s the correct answer here?”

“Logan…”

“A year or so.”

“A year?!”

“Or so… I met her over a year ago but only really got to know her recently.”

Mom’s hands move to her hips, and her lips purse in that way I know means I’m about to be scolded. “And you didn’t think that was something we should know?”

There it is.

“The thought didn’t even cross my mind, Mom. But honestly, no. Why would you need to know that?”

“She’s your brother’s aunt.”

“Uh, I just finished this conversation with her.” I run my hands down my face and sigh. “That doesn’t mean she’s my aunt.”

“No, but—”

“No buts. I’ve never shared my love life with you before. Why would I start now?”

Mom’s eyes widen, and she repeats my words back to me. “Your love life?”

Dammit. Why’d I have to say that?

“Sex life?” I say instead, watching as she pulls another face. “Personal life?”Fuck, there’s not a good option here. “Whatever you want to call it, we’ve never discussed it.”

“Just be careful with her.”
