“I know. I know. She’s too good for me.”

“That’s not—”

“I get it, Mom. I sleep around, and she’s a good girl. I’m not stupid. But I’m also not Dad. I’m not in the habit of purposely hurting people I care about.” That was a low blow considering, but I had to defend myself.

“Logan…”

“I know…I said I was softening to him. But after seeing the look on Dani’s face… Mom, he hurt so many people. Including you.”

Mom sighs but doesn’t disagree with me, so I walk over and pull her into a hug, pressing a kiss to her head. “I’m going to get going. I was supposed to head home hours ago. I missed my surf today.”

She pulls away and stares up at me with an overemphasized grin.

“Actually, can you stay? Just for an hour while I run to the store.”

“What?”Here we go again.I stop short of rolling my eyes like a brat. “Why didn’t you go while we were out?”

“Can you stay or not?” she sasses, ignoring my complaint.

“Fine, I’ll stay. Liam’s going to be sick of me soon.”

Mom smiles as she pats my cheek. “Not possible.”

Liam and I have just started a game of hide and seek when a knock at the door interrupts us. Dani’s standing on the threshold, her eyes wide, looking a little frazzled. So, of course, I make it worse.

“Annette. What brings you here?”

“Huh?”

I sing the opening line to “Every You, Every Me,” by Placebo, and she laughs.

“Oh, right.Cruel Intentions. Shouldn’t I be the Kathryn to your Sebastian in this scenario?”

Ah shit! I walked right into that one.“For the last time, we arenotrelated.” My face contorts in mock annoyance.

“It’s close enough. Just like them,” Dani says, and I roll my eyes as she giggles. “Anyway. I’m here because I left my purse in your parents' car.”

A hint of disappointment hits. A little part of me was thinking she was back for me. I’m about to tell her my mom has the car when something catches my eye. Her purse. Mom must have dropped it inside.

Picking it up, I hold it high above my head and smirk. “Is this the one?”

She crosses her arms as Liam laughs beside me and offers to help, jumping up to reach it. “I’ll get it.”

He tries to leap on my back and tackle me to the ground, which I usually let him do, but this time I need to show I have some strength. You know, to impress the lady.

Dani leans against the wall with her eyebrows raised the entire time, not so patiently waiting. And not at all impressed.

“Alright. You win, Booger. Give the woman her purse.”

Liam jumps on me one more time before leaping up and handing the purse to Dani.

“Here you go. Can you play hide and seek with us?” he asks as she takes it from his hands.

I sense that Dani’s about to say no, until Liam smiles brightly and lifts his shoulders, having already figured out how to get his way. “Pleeease,” he whispers, and wouldn’t you know it, it works because Dani nods and takes off her shoes.

“Since I’m at a disadvantage, not really knowing the best places to hide…how about you and I hide together, Liam, and Logan can find us?”

“Yes!”
