“So,I shouldn’t have slept with her…before telling her.”

Summer’s nose crinkles as she tries to understand my meaning. “That you like her?”

“Among other things, yes.”

Her eyes widen and she shakes her head when she figures out what I’m talking about. “No…I mean, yes. You should talk to her, but if that’s holding you back…it shouldn’t.”

I raise an eyebrow and stare at her. “It shouldn’t? Really?”

“Yes, really.” She rolls her eyes as though it’s that simple, and I’m being a dick. “And before you argue—”

“I’m not going to argue,” I cut her off, mostly because I don’t have the energy to argue, but also because I know she won’t stop until she’s convinced me she’s right.

“Well, okay then. Good. Talk to her.”

“I will. Soon. I’ve just got a lot on my plate at the moment, and I’d rather not add that to it just yet.”

Summer frowns as she pulls me into a hug, her eyes glassy with the hint of tears. “I’m so sorry, Loge. I hate seeing you hurting. If there’s anything I can do for you or your mom…”

“I know. Thank you. But you need to go. You have dinner to cook,” I joke, needing to end our catch-up on a better note.

“Ugh, don’t remind me. I’m running out of healthy ideas. Can’t I just buy us a pizza?”

“Somehow, I don’t think that’s going to cut it.” I laugh, sympathetically patting her back.

“Alright. I better go. But I want you to know, I think it’s great that you’ve found Dani. We’ve only spoken a couple of times, but I really like her. And you deserve someone wonderful.”

I scoff but smile. “Let’s not get too far ahead of ourselves. I’ve slept with plenty of women before. That’s all it is so far.” My stomach twists as I say that, but I need to sort my head out before I go any further.

“Don’t be a dick, Logan,” Summer calls my bullshit. Of course, she wasn’t going to let that one slide. “It doesn’t suit you. You may be a player, but you’re not an asshole.”Well…

“That’s in the eye of the beholder, right?”

I have no doubt there are women out there that definitely think that of me. Many of them. Summer laughs as she shakes her head. “Maybe. But you’re not an asshole on purpose. So cut the crap and admit your feelings before it’s too late.”

I finally go and see Mom on Thursday. Yes, I’m the worst son in the world, but until now, I haven’t been able to figure out what to say to her face-to-face knowing it’s going to be different from our brief phone conversations.

As soon as I walk in the door, she runs into my arms, throwing hers around my neck. Which is not an easy feat, considering I get my height from Dad, not Mom.Gotmy height from my dad. Past tense now.Fuck, that hurts.

“I’m so sorry, Mom,” I say as I wrap my arms around her, pressing a kiss to her head.

She looks up at me in shock, tears coating her eyes. “What? Why are you sorry? I’m the one that abandoned you. I disappeared. You lost your father, and I—”

“No, Mom, you have nothing to be sorry about.Nothing. Let’s stop apologizing to each other. We both needed time. It’s understandable.”

Mom’s lips pull into a suppressed grin, and she raises an eyebrow. “Since when did you become so wise? Maybe you’re finally growing up.”

Shaking my head, I huff out a laugh. “I have no idea. Is Liam home? I’d like to see him,” I say, changing the subject.

“He’s still with your Nan and Pa. They may be getting on in age, but you wouldn’t know it. They play with him like they used to play with you.”

“That’s good. He’s going to need as much family as he can get.”

Mom’s face contorts, and she cringes. “Yes, yes. He is. There’s a lot to work through.”

My brow rises.Okay? I’ve got to admit, her reaction to that makes me a little nervous. What does she need to do?

“Dani’s coming by after work to take Liam out for dinner,” she adds, moving on. “She’s been calling him every day. She’s so great with him.”
