My eyebrows rise as I flash him a questioning look. “Who went pro from the team this year, Dylan? Other than you?”

“Only Brady and…ah yep…and Luke. Guess they really don’t care about bad college reps in the real world.”

“Not unless it’s illegal or affects their game.” I half shrug and then laugh, thinking about how many players they’d lose out on if they did actually care.

We talk about the team for another few minutes, and then the girls pull me away for some girl talk. Logan tries to get my attention several more times, but Lucy’s having none of it. And I’m desperate to know why. I know he’s a player. I figured that out the second I met him. But is there more to it, or is she just putting me in a box markedfragileand trying to protect me?

“I’m going to go out on a limb here and guess there’s more to the story between you and Logan,” Delilah says when the others head to the kitchen. I’m about to answer with something vague when she touches my arm and adds, “You don’t have to tell me. I’ve just noticed he hasn’t stopped looking at you all night.”

“I was just coming over here to say the same thing,” Joel adds, wrapping his arms around Delilah from behind. These two are beyond cute as a couple. I’d love to know their story. I’m always interested in how people got together, how they met, if it was smooth sailing…or not. Delilah looks back at Joel and shakes her head before rolling her eyes and stepping out of his hold. “I’m sorry, Dani. You don’t have to tell either of us anything.”

“No, it’s fine. You’re right. I felt sorry for him and drove him home…well, back to his friend's place.”Summer! That’s why I remember the name.

“Ha! I knew there was more. I can sense these things,” Joel says, confusing me as Delilah blindly slaps his chest.

“Ignore him. Is Logan’s body as good as I imagine it would be?”

Joel‘s jaw drops comically as his head snaps her way. “What the fuck, Del?”

“What? Come on. Even you’ve got to admit he looks like he’d be pretty hot naked.”

Joel’s eyes move to Logan, and he nods. “Can’t deny it. The guy’s a bit of all right.”

Delilah and I burst out laughing, drawing attention from the others, and I decide then and there that this could be an easy group to be friends with. I’m actually glad I came.

As the night goes on, everyone gets louder, and before I know it, it’s midnight and I’m ready to leave.

I’m about to say my goodbyes when strong hands grip my waist, pulling me backward out of the room. I don’t needLaw and Orderto help solve this case; instead, I blindly let my legs take me wherever Logan wants me to go.

When we’re out of sight, his hands drop from my waist, and a shiver runs through me. Like his touch had been my heat source and now it’s gone. I don't get a chance to decipher what that means before his fingers intertwine with mine and he’s spinning me around to face him. When my eyes meet his, a smile lights up his face. I expect it to be cocky or smug, but there’s a genuine warmth to it that has my stomach filling with butterflies.

“It’s my turn now. You’ve avoided me long enough.”

“I’m not avoiding you. I’ve just been getting to know everyone.”

“Hmmm, maybe,” he says, clearly not buying my lies. “I can’t believe you’re here. In my friend's childhood home,” he continues, now with a hint of wonder.

“Who knew we shared the same friend.” I shrug—my go-to response for the night—before shifting my focus to our surroundings. We’re standing in a sunroom at the back of the house. I can clearly see out the windows because neither of us turned on a light when we entered the room. The moonlight shines through, giving us a soft glow, while limited light from the house filters through the doorway.

“I had no idea, or I would have taken full advantage,” Logan says, bringing my attention back to the conversation. My eyes flash to his, and my brows furrow. While his words sound playful, his intense gaze is anything but.

“I’m guessing you only told Lucy about my walk of shame and not the fact that we ran into each other again six months ago?”

Running into Logan at the beach had been a shock. And while it wasn’t unwelcome, I still don’t want to talk about it, even with Logan, who was there. I’ve kind of chosen to block it from my mind.

“You are correct. She’d worry about me if she knew the rest.”

“Should she be worried? Still?”

That’s a really good question. Some days I think I’m totally fine, while other days I don’t even want to get out of bed. That day on the beach had been a hard one for me, but without knowing it, Logan helped. I’d just prefer that we never spoke of it again.

I lift a shoulder, preparing a nonresponse, when Logan cuts me off. “Don’t play this off like I wasn’t there that day. I don’t mind sharing this secret with you. It would just be easier if I knew what the secret was. You may not have told me what was wrong, but I’m not stupid enough to believe it was something that just goes away.”

My heart thuds in my chest. We’re moving toward dangerous territory, and I promised myself I wouldn’t think about any of that today. Granted, I didn’t know I was going to run into Sandy…Logan.

“Can we please do this another time?”

Logan frowns. “I don’t know. Can we? When I asked for your number that day you gave me a fake.”
