“I want Dani!”Shit. That’s not ideal. She’s working and I don’t want to bother her before our date tonight. Yep, no matter what she says, it’s a date.

“Little bro. Booger. We can do this without Dani.”

“No. We. Can’t.”

Fuck my life.

Dani arrives within twenty minutes, flashing me a quick smile as she greets Liam. “What’s the matter?” she asks, pulling him onto her lap. The relief I feel matches the relief in Liam’s eyes, and I can’t hold back my smile at seeing how close they’ve become. You can feel the love they have for each other. And the calm she brings him.

Though he still looks terrified. Just in a more relaxed way, if that’s possible.

“I don’t want to, Dani. Please,” he whispers, his eyes flashing to me as though I’m the bad guy.Dammit. That’s exactly what I didn’t want to happen.

Dani subtly shakes her head my way, turning my frown into a smile, and I’ve got to say that Liam’s not the only one she brings calm to.

“What about if Logan and I get our hair cut too?” she says with excitement in her eyes, hoping to make Liam feel the same. I nod along with her but inwardly curse for not thinking of the idea myself. Especially when Liam perks up and his fingers wrap around Dani’s wrist as he nods before looking my way. “You first, Peanut.”

The hairdresser eyes me up and down as I sit in her chair. When she wraps the towel around my neck, her fingers brush along my skin, and there’s no doubt it’s purposeful. She’s absolutely stunning and definitely mine for the taking. But I have no interest. Not even a twitch.

My eyes find Dani’s in the mirror, and she offers me a shy smile, sending my heart racing.Motherfucker.The hold she has on me…and we’re not even together.

“So, what are we doing for you…” our hairdresser asks, trailing off so I’ll give her my name.

“My name’s—”

“Peanut,” Liam answers, causing Dani to burst out laughing, as a smile lights up my face and I wink his way, watching him grin proudly. It makes me wonder if he knew what he was doing, on some level at least.

“Okay, Peanut,” the hairdresser says with a flirty smile as though she’s in on the joke. “What are we doing?”

“Ahh, just tidy it up,” I say before mumbling a quick thank you as I look toward Dani again, finding her focused on Liam, not paying any mind to what’s going on over here.

“Easy enough,” the hairdresser says while she sets about getting what she needs to tackle my unruly locks and then gets to work. After spraying my head with water, she grabs her scissors and a section of my hair. But before she gets the chance to do anything, Dani asks her to wait. “Do you think Liam could make the first cut? So he can see that the scissors aren’t scary.”

Okay, turns out, Liam was right. We definitely needed Dani here, because once again she has a great idea.

“Good thinking. What do you say, little bud?”

“Yes!” he cheers, crawling up onto a free chair that Dani wheels toward us. The hairdresser hands him the scissors and then holds out my hair, showing him where to cut. His face lights up with a smile and when he looks my way, I shoot him a wink. Please let this work.

“Okay, Liam. Go.”

I hear the snip and love that Liam’s smile grows. At least until Dani gasps and the hairdresser goes pale. What the fuck just happened?

“Thank you, Liam. How about I ask my friend Connie to cut your hair at the same time I cut Peanut’s?” she says, a nervousness to her tone.

“That’s a…a great idea. Right, Liam?” Dani adds, her voice getting me worried.Am I bleeding? I don’t feel any pain.

“How about you show Logan how brave you are,” Dani continues, unable to look me in the eye.

Liam nods as Connie walks over, and it’s only when he’s distracted that my hairdresser finally brings my attention to the issue. Instead of cutting the ends, like she had shown, Liam decided to cut a chunk off my hair about three inches from my scalp.Holy fucking shit.

My eyes flash to his, and I try to hold back my emotions, but when I see him smiling as Connie cuts his hair, I relax. So what if I’ve been growing this hair since I first started surfing.I’m fine.Right? My insides squirm, but I’m not sure I have many options. Short of wearing a hat twenty-four seven, there’s not a lot I can do to cover it up. Maybe it’s time I moved on from that part of my life. I’m not even sure why I’m holding on to it so tightly.Uh. Here goes…

“Cut it off,” I blurt out before I change my mind, huffing out a laugh when Dani’s eyes widen in shock.

Closing my eyes, I let the hairdresser do her thing, and an hour later, I stare at myself in the mirror, barely recognizing the man staring back at me. Though I have to admit, I don’t hate it. Quite the opposite in fact.

Sometime during my haircut, Liam and Dani head to a park across the street. So after paying for Liam and me—and noting that no one even touched Dani’s hair—I walk across to meet them.
