What?“No, I didn’t.”

“Ah, yep, you did. When I called it, I got some dude's voicemail.”

Shit.

“And trust me, I tried a few times.”

Tears prick the back of my eyes, so I look away and bite down on my cheek to stave them off, plastering a smile on my face instead.

“Well, that’s embarrassing,” I say with a fake laugh. “I assure you, that was a total fuckup. I’m usually anal about double-checking things. Anal is my thing!”

Logan’s lips move from their downturned position into a smile so quickly, I have to blink to catch up.What’s that about?

“You’re forgiven.” He laughs. “Can I have the real number now?”

He hands me his phone, not wasting any time as my brows pull in question over his look. Ignoring my confusion, I program my number in. Myrealnumber this time. I even triple check it just to be sure.

“Thank you.” He smiles, and just when I think the conversation is over, “Footloose” by Kenny Loggins starts blasting from my pocket. When I pull my phone out to look at the screen, Logan laughs as he pretends to wipe sweat from his brow. “Had to check for myself.”

“Logan, I—”

“Logan! You better not be somewhere corrupting Dani!” Lucy yells from down the hall. I can hear her footsteps moving closer, and I’m not at all upset that she interrupted us. I’m not even sure what I was going to say, but it’s better to say nothing at all.

When Lucy reaches the doorway, her eyebrows crease and she frowns.

“I promise, not a single part of me is corrupt,” I say with my hands in the air.

Logan huffs out a laugh beside me but shakes his head at Lucy.

“Good. Come on, Joel and Delilah are leaving.”

“Okay, we’ll come say goodbye,” Logan says as though we’re a package deal.

I move to follow Lucy, but he stops me again, an intensity to his gaze. “Dani—”

“Nope, I don’t want to hear what you are about to say. How about we completely start over?”

“How do you know what I was going to say?”

“The look in your eyes.”

He frowns as he considers my request, but I don’t care what his answer is. I’m starting over regardless.

“Hi, I’m Lucy’s friend…Rose,” I say, holding out my hand for him to shake.

Logan’s eyes widen, and a puzzled expression flashes across his face. I hum “My Heart Will Go On” by Celine Dion and watch as a knowing smile appears.

“Hi, Rose,” Logan says, taking my hand in his, “I’m Jack.” He gently squeezes before shaking it up and down a few times.

I try to bite back a grin, but the corners of my mouth lift ever so slightly, giving me away. “It’s nice to meet you, Jack.”

“Come on, you two!” Lucy yells, once again interrupting us.

We don’t move for another beat until Logan hollers, “Comminnng,” and walks me out to join the group, his hand hovering near my lower back the entire way.
