“Dani filed for custody of Liam.”

Cory hides a gasp as Summer jumps to her feet, almost sending my laptop flying to the floor. “She what?!”

“She filed for—”

“No, I heard you. I’m just shocked. When did that happen?”

I don’t really want to say because I know they’ll both be pissed. I’ve been trying to avoid talking about it because I get worked up, and I can’t afford for that to happen right now. I only told Lucy because I was hoping she’d be able to talk Dani out of it. I’d just found out, and I was desperate to stop Dani, anyway I could. But, of course, that didn’t work out, and now it’s time I tell my friends.

“A couple of weeks ago, right around the time I—”

“Disappeared off the face of the earth,” Summer finishes for me, knowing that’s exactly what I was going to say.

“Yep, that’d be it.”

I fill them in on everything that happened, including the many times fate has thrown Dani in my face since that day. While I may have once loved that fate was trying to push us together, it now seems like a cruel joke.

As soon as I’ve finished filling them in, Cory sighs. “You’re in love with her, aren’t you?”

Huh?

“Huh?”Summer voices my thought and then gasps. “Oh, Logan, she’s right. You are.”

The realization I’ve been trying to forget obviously just hit her.

“I knew you liked her,” she starts, “but love…”

“What I feel doesn’t matter anymore. We’re done.”

“But, Logan—”

“No, Summer. There are nobuts. Now, I need to finish getting ready. Can we drop it?”

She frowns but nods before starting up a conversation with Cory. And while I’m slightly relieved to have that off my chest, it doesn’t change anything, and I know that’s not the last conversation we’ll have on the topic.

When I arrive at the college hall, Dani’s the first person I see. And not in ashe’s standing in the entrykind of way, but in ashe is all that I seekind of way. And that sucks.Tonightsucks. And it hasn’t even started yet.

As I move farther into the space, I internally beg myself to look away, tonottake in the fact that her beige-and-black paneled dress gives the illusion that you can see her naked body underneath, or how incredible her legs look in stiletto heels or…fuck, I’m tryingnotto do that.

Look away, Logan. Look the fuck away before it’s too late…andit’s too late.

That little fucker she’s babysitting tonight comes out of nowhere and wraps his arms around her from behind before kissing her head. I feel a burning sensation in my chest before finally looking away. This is a prime example of why one should never catch feelings. WhyIshould have never caught feelings. I don’t need this in my life. Especially now.

A hand on my shoulder breaks me from my thoughts, and I turn to find Summer’s brother, Thomas, with a huge smile on his face. “Logan Taylor! How are you? Summer told me you’d be here.”

I instantly relax at seeing a familiar face that isn’t Dani, even though it still feels weird that we’re friends now, considering how much I hated him for what he put Summer through.

“She failed to mention that you would be here, but it’s good to see you, man.”

Thomas laughs. “That’s probably because I wasn’t sure I was coming until the last minute and called her on the way here.”

“She’ll be excited to see you, assuming you’re staying for a day or two.”

“I am.” He nods with a genuine smile on his face, one I’m sure is there because he’s thinking about seeing Summer. They’ve been seeing each other more often recently, now that it’s the off-season, and I swear, Summer seems a little bit lighter every time they do.

We chat for a few minutes before I have to work, and we depart with the promise to catch up again when my photography duties are over.

As soon as I’ve stepped away, I catch sight of Amy, the photographer I’m working with, and immediately head her way, happy for her to load me up with as much work as possible to keep me distracted.
