“And he’s really fucking smart. Give him some credit. He can handle more than you think.”

“Are we doing the wrong thing? Should we just be letting Dani take him?” Joel cringes, and I immediately realize I’ve said the wrong thing. “I know she’s nottakinghim. But you get what I’m saying, right?”

“I do, but I can’t answer that for you. Has anyone asked Liam what he wants?”

“Not yet. I think Mom’s worried about putting too much pressure on him.”

“That’s understandable, but maybe it’s your answer.”

I decide to wait until after our meeting with the lawyers before suggesting we talk to Liam. Mom doesn’t need to be worrying about that before going inside, especially considering it came across as such an obvious thing to do once Joel put it out there. Why wouldn’t we just ask him?

We sit down with two of the suits from the firm Mom hired, and I immediately feel off about the entire situation. I’m not sure what it is. It’s not like they seem shady or we’re treated poorly. It’s more that I wish the whole thing would just go away.

After introductions, they jump into what sounds like a stock standard spiel before getting into the nitty-gritty, as one of the guys puts it, and then ask if we want Liam to be involved during the hearing.

“Absolutely not,” Mom says without hesitation, and I nod, even though I don’t really have any say in the matter. Suit guy number one nods back, while the other guy jots something down in his official-looking notebook with an uninterested look on his face.Is this case too boring for you, man?

The conversation turns into more of a Q&A session after that until a woman walks in and hands over a piece of paper, putting a smug look on suit guy number two’s face as he nods to suit guy one.

I really thought shit like that just happened in the movies. Why don’t they just have laptops to email each other, or even text?

“Good news,” the smug guy says with a confident grin. “We’ve been looking into a few things, and have just received word that we can probably get this case thrown out so fast, they’ll never even see it coming.”

Who they fuck is 'they'? It’s just Dani.

Mom’s brows furrow as I lean forward slightly in my chair, hoping to catch a glimpse of the sheet in front of him.

“How?” Mom asks, her voice wary, thankfully on the same page as I am.

“We think it’s reasonable to argue that Daniela’s ability to care for Liam’s best interests will be compromised based on information that’s just come to light.”

“What?”

“We are going to argue that because of circumstances surrounding the car accident and Liam’s mother, Daniela is not fit to—”

I slam my fist down onto the table faster than I’ve ever moved before and then rise to my feet. “Don’t evenfuckingthink about continuing that thought.”

“Logan!” Mom whisper-yells, motioning for me to sit down.

“No, Mom. I know where he’s headed. Is this some kind of joke? Nothing that happened that day would affect Dani’s ability to parent Liam.” In fact, nothing atallwould affect it. I don’t know why I’m arguing, considering that would work for Mom’s case. But I refuse to let them bring Dani’s character into question.

“Nothing? Are you sure about that?” Smug guy stares at me like I’m stupid, and my fists clench at my sides.

“Yes, I’m sure.” I grit my teeth. Dani may be on my shit list right now, but if she gains custody, I know she’ll be amazing.

“Hmmm,” he says in a patronizing tone. “Even though her fiancé was there?”Huh?

“Her fiancé was what?”

He leans back in his chair and smirks. “Daniela’s fiancé was with Liam and his mom when she died. He wasinthe car.”

“The fuck did you just say?”Holy fucking shit.A ringing starts in my ears as my chest tightens.

“I said, her fiancé was in the car. He was with Ms. Greco’s sister when he died. There’s reason to believe they were having an affair.”

The ringing gets louder, and I feel sick enough that I drop back into my seat, staring past his head at the wall behind him. “That can’t be… That’s not…”
