“Yes, but you’d probably verbally attack him,” Delilah adds from beside him, her lips pulled into a smirk.

Joel looks to the ceiling in thought before he nods. “She’s got a point. As you were, Logan.”

A small laugh comes from beside me, and I have to hold myself back from giving Joel a hug. He broke the tension, and he absolutely knew what he was doing.

“Okay, let’s go.” I grab Logan’s hand before anyone else tries to argue and pull him toward my car.

“Lucy, wait,” Wes calls as he jogs down the steps behind us.

Logan stops when I do, but I wave him off. “I’ll meet you at the car.”

When Wes reaches me, he stands a few feet away, giving me space. “I just wanted to apologize again.”

“It’s done. It’s okay.” I shrug, but it’s not a lie.

“It’s not okay, Luce. I fucked up and I’m sorry. I hate watching you leave to be with him, but I understand why you have to do it, and I know it’s my fault.”

“It’s no—”

“It is. Just accept my damn apology and tell me we’re going to be okay.”

I recoil slightly until I see the suppressed smile on his face. “Yeah, we’re okay,” I say reluctantly, trying not to smile myself. “I’ll call you when I’m done. And this time, I’ll remember.”

Wes leans forward and presses a chaste kiss to my brow before walking back inside, taking a piece of me with him. While I wish he hadn’tfuckedupas he put it, a little part of me loves his fierce protectiveness. And while I like to think that these days I can take care of myself, there’s something about a man willing to risk it all to defend you. Because make no mistake, Wes was risking a lot with what he did.

“Am I doing the right thing?” I ask Logan when I’m settled in the car beside him. It’s a question I keep asking because I’m still not sure of the answer.

“I think so.” Logan nods, his eyes on everyone watching us from the porch. “Trust me, you don’t want this to end in a custody battle. They hurt everyone involved, especially the kids.” Finally turning my way, he cups my shoulder and smiles. “You’re making the right decisionfor Katie,” he says, almost repeating Joel’s words. “So how could that ever be wrong?”

After putting the car in reverse, he backs us out of the driveway and smiles with his eyes on the road. “You’ve always been a badass in my mind, Luce. You can do this.”

Greg’s eyes light up when I pull back the curtains to enter his room. “You came,” he says with a beaming smile, and I feel sick. His face is swollen and bruised, he can barely open one eye, and there’s a bandage around his head.God, Wes, what did you do?

“I’m here. And you look like shit,” I say honestly but cringe when the words leave my mouth.

Thankfully, Greg laughs. “Thanks. You always knew how to make me feel loved.”

As hard as I try to stop it, my lips pull into a small smile and I shake my head. “I was too good to you.”

“Yeah, you were.” He sighs. “And I realize that now. Hopefully not too late.”

So late, the ship has well and truly sailed.

“Why am I here, Greg?” I say, moving on.

“Because your boyfriend attacked me.”

I cringe again, but he’s right, only that wasn’t my question.

“Why amIhere?”

“Because your boyfriend attacked me,” he repeats, “andI wanted you to see what kind of man he is.”

My eyes narrow. While I’d love to believe that’s his only motivation for asking me here, I’m skeptical.

“He is your boyfriend, right?”

Is he?
