I nod, because he’s right, but I can’t help wondering if there’s a story there.

“That aside, you’re correct. While Carter and I have been friends for forever, and would love to always play together, it wasn’t planned that way. He was traded early and then when San Francisco lost a tight end at the last minute, my agent got me a deal. It was luck, but we’re once again on the same team.”

“That must be nice.”

“It is; I just wish people would see his real potential. I’m hoping they’ll nurture it here. They seem to be a supportive team.”

My lips pull into a smile, but I try to hide it. “You, Wesley Johnson, are a good man.”

“I try.” He smirks, bouncing his eyebrows, before moving in close and slowly draping an arm over my shoulder, giving me a chance to step away.

But this time, I don’t even flinch.

Another hour passes in comfortable conversation, and before long, darkness surrounds us and a cool night breeze sweeps in from the ocean.

“As much as I don’t want to cut the night short,” Wes starts. “But should we start heading back? You’re not doing a good job of hiding the fact that you’re cold.”

What?“I’m not cold,” I say honestly. Sure it’s getting cooler but…

“Damn, I was kind of hoping I’d have an excuse to put my arm around you again.”

I laugh but don’t offer any other response to that. “How about we just walk a little more, and then we’ll turn back. I promise the destination is worth it.”

Wes’s brows rise as he turns his head to the side. “Consider me intrigued. Let’s keep moving.”

Our hands brush accidentally while we continue our walk, and it’s impossible to ignore the electric current that runs through me. Wes makes me feel a lot of things, but the most important one is…safe. He makes me feel safe. While I’ll never completely forget my past, it’s easier to push it to the back of my mind when he’s looking at me like I’ve hung the moon. This is crazy. We only just met, and yet…we didn’t. I can’t deny the connection I felt when I kissed him that day. It’s something I’d never felt before. And the need to kiss him again, just to experience that, is strong.

When our fingers brush a second time, I give in to my reservations and link our hands, giving him a squeeze. Wes gives me a sideways glance as he raises my hand to his smiling lips, pressing a kiss to my knuckles. “Just letting this bad boy know I have no hard feelings,” he says, drawing attention to my fist.

Huffing out a laugh, I pull him to a stop and smile when I see we’ve reached our destination. “I think this was the spot,” I say, nervously nibbling on my bottom lip.

Wes looks around, confused, until his eyes lock on something behind my head. “You meanourspot?”

“Do I? I mean, can you really have a spot with someone you just met?”

“Hey, don’t lessen our relationship; we met ages ago,” he jokes, pulling me closer until our bodies crash together. I flinch on instinct, but only because he caught me off guard. So when he tries to pull away, I hold on tightly, hating the fact that I made him question his moves.

Despite my attempt to keep him close, he takes a step back until our bodies are no longer touching before gently brushing my hair behind my ear, sending my heart into overdrive. “I like you, Lucy. And I’d love to kiss you again…more than anything right now. But I’m going to wait for you to make the first move. When you’re ready.” His eyes bore into mine while he speaks, making sure I understand his meaning. I do. One hundred percent. He’s letting me set the pace. He knows something’s wrong.

Taking my own step back, I watch our arms stretch between us until I’m too far away and his hand drops. Giving him a small nod in acknowledgment, I pause before launching myself at him, slamming my lips to his. The same lips that were the last to touch mine. Despite everything that’s happened between now and then.

“Fuck!” Wes hisses against my mouth before he recovers from the shock and lifts his hands to frame my face, tilting my head up to deepen the kiss.

Keeping one hand on my neck, he moves the other into my hair, holding me tightly in place. He’s strong and yet I trust him completely. I know that if I were to try and pull away, he’d release me in a second. But I have no intention of doing that. Instead, I lift to my toes slowly, making sure my breasts brush against his chest as I rise.

Wes groans, and when I gasp in return, he sneaks his tongue into my mouth, the feel of it sending my pulse racing. Something ignites within me that I haven’t felt for a while, and my body aches for him.

Our tongues twirl slowly as my hands start to explore his body, running along the contours of his rock-hard abs before moving up along his solid back. My fingers play with the strands of his thick hair at the base of his neck, and he groans into my mouth before breaking away, moving his lips to my neck and shoulder. As he sucks on the sensitive skin just below my ear, I can’t stop the moan that escapes me, and I intertwine our fingers, squeezing his hand, before my mouth seeks out his once more. When I bite down on his lip, Wes jolts, pressing his obvious erection into me, and I apparently lose all reason.Oh, God.Wrapping my spare arm around his neck, I move closer, pulling him down into me as my tongue pushes back into his mouth.

“Wait, Lucy,” Wes murmurs against my lips. “We have to stop.”

I freeze instantly—never wanting to do something against his will, or anyone’s—and step back.

“I’m sorry, I—”

“You have nothing to apologize for,” he rasps, a little out of breath. “That waseverything. But if we keep going, I can’t guarantee I’ll keep it G-rated, and there are a few reasons that shouldn’t happen. We’re on a public beach for one.”

My eyes scan the area, and sure enough, there are still quite a few people scattered around, despite the late hour. I laugh nervously as Wes pulls me in close again with a smile on his face. Palming my cheek, he presses a chaste kiss to my forehead. “What the fuck is it about you, Lucy Mathers? You’re driving me crazy.”
