“I know, I’m just…never mind.” I smile as I walk back into the room, busying myself at my desk.

“You’re worried about the douche,” Logan says, reading between the lines.

“Yes.” I sigh. “I know he can’t get in here, but he’s always on my mind.”

“Understandably, but you know we’d never let anything happen to you or Katie. Dani and I are just around the corner; Dylan and Joel are only an hour away. Actually I should say Summer and Del because I’m pretty sure those two would kick his ass for you. Maybe more than the guys would.”

“You’re right. Especially about the girls. Summer would even kickyourass if I told her to.”

I wink as I continue to pack up my things.

Logan laughs. “No doubt. In fact, she’d take great pleasure in that. Jokes aside though, you’re safe.” He pauses for a second before adding, “Plus I hear there’s a certain ex-NFL giant who’d do just about anything for you.”

My jaw drops as my eyes flash to Logan’s mischievous grin. How the hell does he know anything about Wes?

“Summer,” he laughs, answering my silent question.

I’m about to play down our relationship when Katie comes barreling into the room, practically bouncing off the walls in excitement. “Wes wants to take us to the park to play football tomorrow, and then out for ice cream! Can we go, Mom? Can we go?”

I bite back a nervous smile as I shake my head.Of course he does. Well played, Wes, well played.

”You know Uncle Dylan loves playing football with you,” I say because playing football isn’t a new thing for her.

“But he’s not Wes, Mom. He’s just Uncle Dylan.”

Technically she’s not wrong but poor Dylan.

“What about swimming? You promised we’d try again this week.”

Katie pauses and gives me a look that almost breaks my heart. “Can we try next week?”

Ugh. I have to get her back in the water, but forcing the issue isn’t going to work.

“Okay, sweetie. I’ll talk to Wes.”

“Yes!”

She hugs my legs and then takes off running again, back where she came from, and like before, I watch her until I see Dani walking her way. Only then do I relax.

“What were you going to say about Wes?” Logan says knowingly, pulling my gaze away from the hallway. “Or should I saydenyabout Wes?”

“Ha ha. There’s nothing going on. He’s just a nice guy who happens to know that Katie likes football.”

“If you say so,” he says with a smirk.

As soon as Logan is gone, I dial Wes’s number, fumbling when he answers on the first ring with a simple hello, as if hewasn’texpecting my call.Yeah, right.

“You answered that pretty quickly.”

“Why wouldn’t I? I’m hopeful that this call might hold some good news for me.”

“Or it might be me putting you in your place for using my daughter to get what you want,” I deadpan.

There’s silence until Wes curses under his breath, forcing me to hold back a laugh, waiting to see how this plays out.

“Fuck, I’m sorry. It wasn’t premeditated or anything. She popped into my office and started talking about football, and I genuinely wanted to take her. I mean, getting to see you is a great bonus, but that’s not why I asked. I’m new to all this kid stuff, but I’m trying.”

He’s trying? My heart. Now I feel bad.
