“Let them try. They can’t fill the job I currently have, remember? They need me more than I need them. And as for you? If they fired you, I’d quit.”

Ugh! I want to stay mad at him but it’s hard when he says nice shit like that.

“What about the players? You’d be letting them down.”

Wes’s head drops back, and he grunts as though that realization just hit him. “Damn those fuckers for growing on me.”

I can’t help but laugh until I remember the other reason I shouldn’t have been kissing him.

“I’ve got to go, but set up a meeting and we’ll talk.”

Wes gives me a look that screams “you’re kidding me, right?” then laughs.

“Okay, Lucy. I’ll book a time.”

And with that he’s off, leaving me frozen on the spot, needing a moment to process what just happened. He said he wanted a date, but are we a thing now?

The morning flies by, and when I finally check my phone at lunch, I have a message from Dylan.

Little bro: How’s Thursday night?

A giddy feeling takes over me.

Lucy: Perfect. Thank you

Thursday night.Only two days away. Butterflies flutter around my stomach as a small smile plays on my lips. I feel like a schoolgirl with my first crush. It’s been so long since I’ve felt this nervous anticipation. Actually, Wes is really the only guy to ever elicit these feelings. And we’re back on track. Finally.I hope.

When the last of my duties for the day are done, I start cleaning my work space until I hear the rap of knuckles on my door, Wes’s signature announcement. He pokes his head through the open space before I’ve answered, and his small smile almost takes my worries away.

“You didn’t accept my meeting request. Too busy for me now?”

He raises an eyebrow as he walks farther into the room, and I bark out a laugh. The contrast between this Wes and the one from last week can only be described as black and white. He’s a completely different person. More like the guy I met all those years ago. I’m about to tell him just that when Aaron enters the room, not even bothering to knock.

“Lucy, do you have the report on Easton, I… Wes.” He nods by way of greeting before his eyes shoot to mine, a look of annoyance crossing his features.Wes really has no friends here.

“Don’t you knock?” Wes demands, and I have to bite back a smile. And that’s why.Guess he hasn’t changed as much as I thought.

“Do you have a reason to be here?” Aaron counters, causing Wes to sneer.

“Same reason you have. I wanted Easton’s report.”

He’s full of shit, sort of, but I’ve got to hand it to him for thinking on his feetandfor not telling Aaron why he’s really here, since he said he doesn’t give a shit about his job.

“Wes, thanks for stopping by. I’ll have the report ready Thursday evening.” My eyes lock on his, hoping he understands my meaning, and when his face lights up with a smile, I know that he has.

“Thursday is perfect. I’ll pick it up then.”

“Thank you.”

He turns to Aaron and his smile morphs into a smirk. “Aaron, always a pleasure. Bye, Lucy.”

With that he disappears out the door, whistling as he goes.Whistling! He’s a little shit because no one would be that happy about a report on a player that’s barely injured, and since Aaron is staring at me like we’ve both lost our minds, I think it’s safe to say he’s definitely on to us.

“Thursday, really? Why’s it going to take so long?”

“I’ve got some patients who have more pressing injuries and I need to get their reports done for third parties.”

Aaron nods and departs, because that’s a plausible excuse and not a complete lie, even though I will definitely have the report done by tomorrow afternoon at the latest.
