Chapter 3

Race

Pulling my truck into the parking lot, I parked and stared at the clubhouse entrance. I didn’t want to have this meeting, but if I didn’t show up for this, then I may as well never come back. Bear would consider my absence a personal attack, and as ridiculous as it would seem to most, I owed this club my life. Tank gave me a gift in bringing me here, but Bear accepting me, past mistakes and all, gave me a place where I fit because I sure as hell didn’t feel like I fit in the world anymore.

The truth was, they should’ve opened those damn prison gates and put a permanent “F” for felon on my back before shoving me back into society. Nobody wanted a felon. The moment they found out what I was, everything changed. Their attitude, their acceptance, every damn thing.

But not here.

Nobody fucking cared here.

Not in this club or in this town.

They didn’t see the mistakes. They only saw me, and they trusted I was doing the best I could to right the wrongs of my past.

I’d proven myself over the years. I stayed true to my plan to get my life straight, and if this was what I needed to do to thank Bear for giving me a place to land while I worked on myself, then I’d do it.

Pushing open the door, I stepped out, slammed it closed, and crossed the parking lot. It was Sunday and after a party, so the place was quiet. Most of the guys wouldn’t roll out of bed before this afternoon, but I’d been up and out of this place before the sun rose. I just needed to drive and clear my head before I agreed to watch over the one person I’d been avoiding for years.

I walked into the clubhouse and gave my eyes a moment to adjust to the darkness. Glancing toward the bar, I saw Bear standing behind it and Becs sitting across from him on a stool. His eyes were locked on me, but she was staring down into her glass of what looked like water.

I made my way toward the bar when Bear called out. “You working this morning?”

“Nope,” I answered before settling on a stool, making sure to leave an empty one between me and Becs.

“You drove out of here pretty early.”

I smirked, hoping if I teased him, he’d just let it go and move on. “You ever sleep?”

He grinned. “Sleep when I’m dead.”

We both laughed. “I’m not sure you will.”

I heard ringing and watched Bear frown while pulling his phone from his front pocket. “Shit, I gotta take this. Be right back.”

Neither of us said anything, but Becs lifted her head and watched him walk out from behind the bar and round the corner, obviously heading for his office.

When the silence became too heavy, I decided to break it. “Must’ve been important.”

Her head turned slowly until our eyes met. “What?”

“The call.” I pointed at the hallway. “It must’ve been important. Don’t think much would drag him away from a conversation about your protection.”

She nodded once before facing forward again. “I don’t need protection.”

“A lot of shit goin’ on right now,” I pointed out.

“It’s nothing we haven’t seen before, and no one put protection on me then.”

I considered that before replying. “This time’s different.”

“Why?” She faced me and lifted an eyebrow. “Because I’m pregnant?”

The force of those words slammed into me, and I let the anger and jealousy wash over my body. I hated that she was having a baby with another man. Hated that he would likely be a big part of her life and resented the fact that it wasn’t me, but I kept my expression neutral so she wouldn’t catch on to how much it bothered me.

“That, yeah, but Viper’s a bigger threat than the Sinners have faced before. The Widows could end this club if their president makes that decision.”

She dropped her head. “He’s gonna do something stupid.”
