I started the engine and smiled. “Meet you here later?”

He leaned in my window and pressed his lips to mine in a hard kiss before pulling back abruptly. “I’ll be here.”

A sense of relief filled me, and I smiled while backing out of the driveway.

Chapter 32

Race

I pulled out right behind Becs, regretting that I didn’t just tell her I would see her at Elite, but I needed to sit my ass in the meeting, and I couldn’t take any chances that she wouldn’t react well if she knew Jax had involved the club. Bear had gotten the text from Jax that we needed to meet about thirty seconds before Becs came back downstairs, and we both knew the call she received was either from Sal or from Jax. I hoped she would come clean, but it was obvious she was hiding this for a reason and one she didn’t want us to know.

It took less than ten minutes to pull into the parking garage next to their office building. I parked and swung my leg over the seat of my bike while pulling the helmet from my head and hanging it from the handlebar. My bike was as safe in this building as it was parked outside the clubhouse, probably even more so considering this building and everything around it was being watched by camera’s not visible to the naked eye.

There was a reason these men and Elite Securities had the reputation they did.

Jogging up the stairs, I smirked when the door clicked to unlock. With no one sitting at the front desk, that meant they had eyes on me from the conference room where they held their meetings. I headed across the waiting room and down the hallway until I came to the conference room. I knew exactly where it was, but even if I hadn’t, I could’ve followed the sounds of their voices, considering they hadn’t bothered to close the door. It was Sunday, with no other business going on, so there was no reason to close the door.

I turned the corner, and the room quieted, all eyes on me.

“You made it.” Jax stood and held out his hand, which I shook. “Have a seat.”

“She taking Wyatt?” Bear asked.

I sat down across from Bear. “Yeah. She should be here soon.”

“How was your trip?” My head snapped to the right of Bear, and I met Brody’s stare. He must’ve read the confusion in my expression because he continued. “Becs told us you had to go home.”

I glanced at Bear who nodded slightly before facing Brody again. “My dad found himself in some trouble. I went home to help him out.”

“He good now?” Jax asked from where he sat at the head of the long conference table.

“Yeah.” I nodded. “He’s thinking about coming to New Hope.”

“Good.” Jax put his elbows on the table. “I hope he does.”

Kyle walked through the door and held up his laptop. “You tell them yet?”

We all watched him head to his seat at the other end of the table, but it was Brody who spoke. “Nope. Just waiting for everyone to get here, so we don’t have to repeat ourselves.”

“Gotcha.” Kyle slid into his seat and opened his laptop.

“She’s here.” Jax motioned to his phone, which must’ve alerted him, and he pressed a few buttons. I heard the door buzz and met Bear’s stare across from me.

I listened to her footsteps coming down the hall and knew the minute she saw me and Bear, she was going to be pissed.

I wasn’t disappointed.

Becs crossed the threshold already talking. “Sorry I’m late. I had to drop off Wyatt…” She trailed off when her eyes landed on mine. I recognized her expression immediately. It was a combination of anger mixed with disappointment and one I’d seen throughout the years. It was exactly what I expected, but still a gut punch.

With a sigh, she searched the table until she found Bear. “When did you find out?”

Bear frowned, and his eyes flicked between Becs and me, but he started speaking. “Jax called me yesterday.” Bear leaned forward and put his elbows on the table. “My question is why did I need to hear this shit from Jax? Why didn’t I hear it from you?”

“You knew this morning,” she stated but didn’t wait for or probably even expect an answer before making her way to the seat beside Kyle, making sure she put plenty of distance between us.

“I made a decision to bring in your brother and the club, Becs.” Jax began speaking, and she focused on him. “My team met and agreed the sooner they’re involved, the better.”

“I understand,” she answered quietly, but it was obvious she was disappointed that Jax shared any of this with us. What I couldn’t understand was why. We all knew she didn’t want to add more shit to Bear’s plate, but there was more to it. I was just hoping we found that out today.
