Becs smiled softly, but it was obvious she didn’t feel good about any of it. We still didn’t know if we could stop the sale to Sal, and until we were able to cut him out, she wouldn’t feel any relief from the guilt she was carrying.

“Anything stopping us from calling Ben right now?” I threw out the suggestion. “Might help if we’re all involved in the call so he knows just what we’re facing.”

“I think that’s smart,” Brody answered. “Put him on speaker.”

I dug my phone from my pocket and glanced at Becs, but she was staring at her folded hands.

With a sigh, I dialed Ben’s number and laid my phone on the table.

Chapter 33

Race

“Calling me on a Sunday. Must be important.”

I glanced around the table when Ben answered the phone. “You’re on speaker, man.”

There was a slight pause and suspicion in his voice when he replied, “Who am I talking to?”

“I’m at Elite meeting with your brother.”

Ben snorted. “Gonna have to be more specific, Race.”

Jax chuckled. “You got me, brother. Also got Brody, Striker, Kyle, Bear, and Becs.”

“Alright, well, you’ve definitely got my attention.”

We heard a door slam and an engine start. “Where the hell are you?”

“Had to pick up some shit at the store for Charlie,” he explained. “Tell me what’s going on.”

“We’ve got a situation that we could use your help with if you’re willing,” Bear started.

“Depends on what it is,” Ben answered honestly.

Bear glanced at Jax who nodded before speaking up. “A man named Sal Bianco is looking to purchase a piece of property bordering the Sinners property.”

“I know that piece,” Ben replied. “We looked at it for possible development a couple of years ago.”

“What stopped you?” Bear asked.

“It’s not a great location. We found a smaller piece in Cranberry that worked better with our plans at the time.” Ben paused before continuing. “I’m betting we don’t want Bianco buying this.”

“You would win that bet,” Bear responded. “We’ve got a bad feeling he’s looking to buy this and create a bidding war between the Widows and us. He knows we don’t want the Widows next door, so the odds of us paying to keep that from happening are pretty damn good.”

“We think if you go in with a bid, with your reputation and the company’s, the odds are good the town council would sell to you over someone they don’t know,” Jax added.

“You want us to develop it?” Ben asked, but he sounded unsure.

“Not exactly,” Bear replied. “We’d be willing to either rent or buy it from you.”

“What are you thinking of doing with it?” Ben inquired. “Not to be a dick, but I don’t want to be involved in something that will fuck with our reputation.”

“We’re thinking about putting in a racetrack,” Bear declared, his eyes on me, and a small flutter of excitement filled me. The thought of racing again was an exciting one, but I knew this was a long shot, so I pushed it down and continued listening.

“Hmm…” Ben paused. “That’s not a bad idea. Give the community something to do on the weekends.”

“Exactly what we were thinking,” Jax stated.
