Before pulling from the parking lot, I started the engine, found Becs under my favorites, and hit call.

“How’d it go?” Her sweet voice echoed through my truck, and I smiled. She was nervous, and I understood why.

“Good, I think. They presented a proposal to the town council today. I’m heading to the clubhouse right now for church.”

She giggled, and I heard Wyatt babbling in the background. “Sorry, I’m getting Wyatt dinner, and he’s very demanding. Wait, I thought the members already agreed to this. Why do you need to have church?”

“Because Ben changed the terms a little,” I explained, not sure how much I should say, but then I decided to share all of it. She deserved to know. She was as much a member of the club as anyone else, but more than that, I liked hearing her opinion. “He’s not planning to sell it to us, but instead wants a partnership.”

“Hmm…I wonder if Bear will agree to that?”

“I wonder that too,” I admitted. “I hope he does. I think it could be good for the club.”

“Plus, you’d get to race again.” I could hear the smile in her voice while she spoke. “Which I personally would love to see.”

“I ever thank you for being the one to think of that?”

“Nope,” she teased.

“Maybe I’ll do that tonight,” I suggested.

“You do owe me,” she teased.

I slowed at the intersection, but when the light turned green, I continued driving. “If this all works out, I could teach you to race.”

“Don’t say that unless you’re serious,” she replied. “Because I would love that.”

“Then I’ll teach you,” I promised. “If all goes as planned.”

“I’m holding you to that.”

“You should.” Turning off Main Street, I started down the long road leading to the clubhouse. “How’s my boy?”

She sighed. “Good. He’s eating, but he’s pretty tired tonight.”

“I’ll be home as soon as possible. Can you keep him awake for a while?”

“I’ll do my best,” she promised.

I lowered my voice. “See you soon, baby.”

“Okay,” she replied just as quietly before ending the call.

I couldn’t wipe the grin from my face while I parked my truck and jogged into the clubhouse, heading straight to the room where everyone was waiting for me. I opened the door and stepped inside, coming face-to-face with all the members.

I grabbed my chair and slid into the seat just as Bear began speaking. “I updated the guys on what has gone on up to this point, so you can just start with what happened today.”

“Ben presented his plan to the town council today.”

Bear jerked up his chin. “That’s good.”

“It’s not the plan we originally talked about.”

Bear narrowed his eyes, and I felt the tension increase in the room. “Not sayin’ it’s not a good plan, but it’s a little different and will take some concessions on our part.”

“Like what?” Bull grumbled.

“He’s proposing a partnership.”
