“Who?”

She gestured toward the hallway. “Bear.”

I glanced toward the still empty entrance to the bar before staring at the side of her face again. “Why do you say that?”

“Overheard some stuff.” She shrugged. “I think my being pregnant is forcing his hand.”

I was surprised she thought that but not as shocked as I was that she admitted it to me. “None of this is your fault.”

“Yeah, right.” She snorted and lifted her glass to her lips. “You’re the only one saying that.”

“Did Bear tell you that?” That didn’t sound like Bear. There was no way he would put any of this shit on her.

She set her glass back on the bar after a long drink. “It doesn’t matter. I just have to accept the fact that I’m becoming exactly what I never wanted to be.”

“What’s that?”

“His responsibility.”

“I don’t think he sees it that way.” I tried to defend Bear, but I had a gnawing feeling that she heard something from her brother that gave her that impression. “Shit happens. He knows that.”

She laughed without any humor and glanced at me. “Not to you, though.” She patted her stomach. “This would’ve never happened to you, right?”

My lips tipped in a small smile that would likely piss her off. “Well, I’m a guy, so no, I don’t think I’d get pregnant.”

Her eyes flicked back and forth between mine, and her lips tipped in a grin before she caught herself and looked away.

“Sorry about that,” Bear said as he turned the corner. He glanced at us and then grinned. “Happy to see you’re both alive.”

I chuckled, but Becs only raised her eyebrows. She was not in the mood to be teased today. Something told me that had a lot to do with whatever she heard her brother say.

“What’s the plan?” I asked.

Becs rolled her eyes. “In a hurry?”

Before I could answer, Bear started to speak. “Becs is moving into my townhouse.”

“No, I’m not,” she answered immediately.

“It’s not negotiable,” he explained. “I can’t keep you safe where you live. Plus, my place has a security system so when neither of us can be there with you, I’ll know you’re safe alone.”

“Look, I love you, but the reason I do is because we don’t live together.” I relaxed when Bear grinned at her words. “Just have someone drive by occasionally and check on me or something.”

“Not good enough.” He shook his head. “Most of the guys have full-time jobs that keep them away.”

“Let’s just give it a few weeks and see how it goes before we react,” she negotiated. “We have no idea what the Widows are up to right now.” She watched him closely while she spoke. “Unless you’re planning something.”

“That’s club business.” I leaned an elbow on the bar top and watched them face off. Becs knew him better than anyone, and if she thought he was planning something, he probably was. “You know that.”

“Yep.” She drummed her short fingernails on the wood. “How could I ever forget that?”

He jerked up his chin. “What the hell’s your problem? This baby hormones or what?”

Her face flushed red, and I braced. I’d seen Becs pissed a few times, but she usually gets a handle on it quickly. Today, I wasn’t so sure she would. “I don’t need a babysitter, Bear. And I don’t need to move in with you. I can take care of myself.”

He snorted. “What are you gonna do when a fucking Widow shows up at your door?”

She leaned forward. “You taught me how to shoot, even bought me a gun, now trust me to know how to use it.”
